How do I know if my band is too full?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on June 8th, with my first fill I felt no restriction. So I had a second fill 3 weeks later. On yesterday evening after the fill I was able to eat and keep down a small piece of salmon and about a quarter of a bake potato. This morning I was unable to keep down an egg. How do I know if I'm too "full" or perhaps I need to adjust to the new way of eating? I read somewhere that you may feel more fullness in the morning?

If your band is too full, you would have difficuties swallowing liquids. Or even your own saliva.

Your band is too full if you are experiencing problems. You are already too tight if all you can do is swallow Water and your own saliva - you must be able to eat enough food to meet whatever amount of calories required to keep you alive and well.

If you can eat enough to do that, but emotionally you cannot stop when your pouch is full and you are constantly getting stuck or throwing up, then you are too tight. Your behaviours MUST match what the band allows - if you are unable to adjust your behaviours so that you avoid throwing up, then you are too tight, even if you can eat too much.

This is a mental thing as much as a physical thing for most people.

And most people are tighter in the mornings then later in the day. I would not use your morning restriction as a decision factor unless you are unable to drink warm liquids in the mornings. If you're unable to do that, then you are definitely too tight.

Amen! Thank you so much for saying this! I could not agree more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
