12 months out and have gained 10 lbs back after month if no decrease

Recommended Posts

Frustration - I dropped weight were quickly as expected but by month 6 I really started to slow down. For 4 months over the summer, nothing came off. And now over that last 2 months I have noticed my new clothes feeling snug so I got back on the scale and I am up 10 pounds! Why? I am eating the same things, no increase in portion size. I went to my surgeon for my one year check up and he said I am fine. I really wanted him to approve me fit the Roux. Like I said I am very frustrated. Background. PreOp weight 297, lowest 210, now 225, goal 195.

Possibly you may need to up your caloric burning in your work outs? Build more muscle mass to burn more fat? To see a specialist in hormonal health. PCP's are not experts in that field. It could be a shift in hormones. If you have built more muscle....it does weigh more than fat, so that could be the cause. In all I've read about health and fitness that I never implemented until now....those could be causes.

Before I had my sleeve i went to see a metabolic and hormonal specialist. He taught me all kinds of things about my genetic make up and the kinds of food my body works best with. :-). Best wishes!!!

I'm 5 months postop and my weight loss has slowed to a stall. I totally feel your frustration - many, many people on this forum do. The sleeve isn't a miracle, and it's a constant fight every single day even in maintenance, heck, especially in maintenance.

If you are being totally honest about your food intake and it's well within the guidelines of your WLS team, I second the exercise advice, if you aren't on a regiment already. You can also try the 5:2 diet, I think you are far enough out post-op that you could benefit from it.

Wishing you continued success! You can get yourself out of this funk!!

Wait are you still wanting the RNY? You are 225 with a goal of 195? That is do-able with the sleeve but it's going to take more effort than how easily things come off for the first 6-12 months post-op.

If you are not tracking your food, I suggest trying it for a while and see if there is any detectible pattern. Free sites are caloriecount.about.com, myfitnesspal and sparkpeople just to name a few. I've found for me personally all I need to do is eat 100-300 more calories a day than my "norm" to make the weight quickly pile on. Time to go back to basics, get back on the scale more than once every month or two, (I would suggest at least weekly) increase your Water, and cut out any extra snacking. Focus on lean Protein, and measure/weigh/track your food.< /p>

Also if you are exercising more or building muscle that might account for a gain, maybe not all 10lbs though. So take a look at your exercise patterns and see if you have been building more muscle.

I think that losing from 225 to 195 is completely reasonable to do with the sleeve without resorting to the RNY. Just my 2 cents!

Understand that one can gain the weight back with the RNY as one can with the sleeve. So you might as well focus on your eating and exercise efforts with the sleeve as a tool - you can do this!

My husband had the RNY 6 yrs ago. He started at 335, got down to 185 and then up to 220 where he has been for awhile. His job just changed, so he's walking at work more instead of just sitting at a desk and has dropped 5 lbs in 2 wks. He's also splitting meals with me, since I just had the sleeve 4 wks ago.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
