Pre surgery diet struggles

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on Nov 18, started my liquid diet a week ago. I did ok the first 2 days. I'm not hungry, but I've been emotional eating. I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to lose enough weight & shrink my liver enough & my surgeon won't do the surgery. I had lost 5 lbs, but I still have 2 weeks. I'm supposed to have 3 Meal Replacement shakes & 1 high Protein, low fat , low carb meal a day. Need some encouragement please!

Hi, I'm Debbie and I'm starting my 6 month journey for the Gastric Sleeve. I wish you well and please continue to write because I know I'm going to be scared. I have an auto immune disease that attacks my thyroid and has made my life hell. I'm so hoping this works to improve that and to take off the thyroid weight I've gained. I know it will be an up and down journey but hoping for more up days. Try to read or any hobby to take your mind off of things. That's what I try to do.

Good luck!!!

I don't know who your doctor is, but I went on a doctor directed modified South Beach diet. I ate as much meat as I wanted but no carbs but some greens, Beans, brocolli, cauliflower. No peas, corn, etc. Keep your carbs under 40 a day, mandatory. I even ate out and had wine. I ate scrambled eggs for Breakfast with cheese, omlettes, tuna, turkey breast, ham for lunch...even hambergers. dinner was steak, fish, chicken, pork chops with veggies. I lost a pound a day and shrunk my liver by 50% I actually got a gold star on my picture of my liver that my doctor presented to me after surgery! I think your clinic is using the wrong approach...No breads or carbs....easy to do when you are eating meat and certain veggies. Please do not worry about surgery. It was the easiest surgery I have ever had. Next to no pain after the surgery. In fact, if it didn't irritate my stomach, I would have taken Advil instead of the liquid Oxycontin they gave me afterward.

First week after surgery is great for me but the liquid diet. Got trying. Now I am on pureed food! I get to chew and have texture. Friday the 8th I go to mushy food! WooHoo! My surgery was on October 24 and I have lost a pound a day since then. Tonite I had pureed tuna noodle casserole. Yesterday, I had pureed stead, potatoes and gravy! Was tasty!

You should NOT be enabling her cheating on her preop. I am also in the thick of a 15 day liquids only and it sucks yes but you aren't her surgeon nor her doctor and should not be giving the green light on what is or isn't right for her surgery.

Yes the preop sucks, yes everyone's is different and that makes it suck more, but you could be jeopardizing her success and her surgery even happening by giving your two cents.

To the OP. I know it's bad. At least you get one meal a day, I'd kill for some meat right now but that's not the point. You need to try and follow it as best you can, because once you're stomach is out you'll have a lot of restrictions and if you don't follow them then, you could endanger not only your long term success but your life. So think of it as training, listen to your doctors orders and stick with it!

I agree with you Mouseonthemile! You need to train yourself with your head hunger etc before hand! Listen to your Surgeon he knows best and when you invest this much money towards a surgery you should really be thankful to get this gift cause lot's of people don't have the opportunity to do so. Don't mess it up by listening to people who want to jeoperdize your success! My surgery is Dec 13 ;0) and I'm very blessed to have this opportunity.

Thanks everybody. I'm back on the wagon this morning. My surgeon usually requires 1 week like I am eating now (3 Bariatric Meal Replacement shakes & 1 low fat low carb high Protein meal) then 1 week with 5 shakes a day & nothing else. Since I had 3 weeks til surgery the last time I was in to see him, he said if I started right then, I could do the 3 shakes 1 meal diet the whole 3 weeks until the day before surgery.(clear liquids only that day). So that is what I was trying to do, but looks like I will have to do the full liquid next week since I cheated so much the last few days. I need a swift kick in the butt to wake me up to the fact that this is a gift to even have the surgery, I have got to quit squandering my chance. That's where this forum is great. Thanks again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
