Anyone have an open surgery and not laporscopic?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if any of you went in for laroscopic and it ended up being open. My doctor is of course going to try not to open, but just curious. If you had open, did you have complications? What was the healing time?

You will probably hear from someone who either ended up having an open surgery or who knows someone who had open due to adhesions on the stomach. I haven't heard of any yet for the sleeve, although a couple years ago I went to a RnY information session and they seemed to convert to open procedure much more often. In fact, I was told to lose 75 pounds if I wanted a laparoscopic RnY - to which I laughed because if I could have lost 75 pounds that easily, I wouldn't be needing surgery! :) I was sleeved in September and it was the best decision ever. I have 4 small incisions and 1 slightly larger one where the stomach came out.

Is there a specific reason (previous stomach surgery, etc) that you or your doc are thinking your surgery will be converted to open? Medical technology is amazing these days! Good luck

I have had several surgeries laproscopically so I don't think it will, but I was just wondering. I have lost 35lbs and my surgery is scheduled for 11/19. my doctor was like...lets scheduled it for December so you can lose more, but hy the time I have surgery on 11/19 I will have already been on the liquid diet for 7 weeks. I don't think I could take 3 additional weeks.

My doctor had to add an incision to get a better view for my surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
