No waitress! There is nothing wrong with my meal..i just have a small stomach!

Recommended Posts

I went out to a restraunt the other day and ordered a cup of seafood chowder sans garlic toast. I got halfway through the cup. I mean this was chunky and thick chowder so of course i am full a lot sooner. The lady goes to take my friend's finished dishes and i ask her to take mine too, to which she said " is everything okay Maam? Is there somthing wrong with your meal???" To which i said "nope! I just have a small stomach". She then proceeded to stare at me before taking my food away. I realized shortly thereafter that to her i probably dont look like a person with a small stomach given my big stomach where i carry all my weight. To me..i forget that the rest of the world doesnt know i had 85 percent of my stomach removed.

I must say though...i have had some interesting responses and encounters.. People like to comment on the amount of food a person can eat. For example: i ordered a soft side up egg..1 egg to be exact. I had to order it as a side. The lady asked me if i wanted toast and hashbrowns..and i said " nope..just the egg" and she said "just an egg? 1 egg? Okay?????" She probably thought i was nuts.

I have had the same thing happen. I think it is even more odd when I am at places that I used to order normal portions.

Great post, Heather.

Wife and I order an appetizer, eat half, and get a box for the rest. All around are mountains of food being delivered to the "norms". We feel like Hobbits. I am Sam Wise Gamgee, she is Rosy from the Green Dragon. :D

I also like the looks I get when I don't order a drink at a restaurant! I usually get a to go cup when we leave so I can have some at my 30 min window!!

That's what I say too. "Everything was great! I just have a small stomach and I'm stuffed." That's all the explanation they need.

I have my 13 year old who has ADHD and the impulsivity will just blurt it out and tell strangers. Working on that.

I get weird looks when I order my food and the go box at the same time. I tell them I am limiting my portions, and it's easier to package it before I start eating. This also prevents me to picking as I sit and wait on my family to finish eating and making myself sick. Last week my daughter and I went to outback steak house for dinner. We ordered the smallest steak they have, and asked them to skip the bread. The waitress reassured me several times that the bread was hot and fresh. I explained that my daughter does a reduced gluten diet, and I don't eat any bread at all, poor thing was so confused she offered to wrap up a loaf for us to eat later. I guess it really didn't sink in for her at all. We split the salad (my favorite place for a salad on the planet), I had 2 bites of the steamed veggies and 3 bites of steak and my daughter ate the rest. It was a perfect $15, including drink for my daughter, steak dinner for us. And the turtles in our pond LOVED the bread that she sent home with us.

I ate out yesterday with my son and a friend. I was keenly aware of the mountains of food being served and remembered how I used to eat. I got shrimp lettuce wraps with some awesome fresh mango salsa. It took me the same time to eat my appetizer as it did my company to eat their mountain of food. I was full on 12 small shrimps with salsa. I didn't eat the lettuce.

Later on last night my son asked me if I was full on what I ate. I think he is still in shock how little I eat now. Occasionally I miss feasting and then I remember how unhealthy I felt and what it led to. Then I move forward again. :-)

I have an 83 year old brother-in-law who does the same. There is no working on him, he is what he is. Good thing I don't care. :D

Heather M, I used to get the same until I got to a certain point in my weight loss when people stopped saying it. Then, it seemed to make sense to them that as I was a small person, I didn't need a lot of food rather than I was a small person because I didn't eat a lot of food. People, eh?!

We more or less eat gluten free and carb free now. And instead of the server trying to push the bread, I usually say something like we are allergic to bread or gluten. Servers avoid that like the plague and they are usually very nice about it too. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
