Got My Date...but...

Recommended Posts

The way my doctor explained the pre-op diet was that when a person has rapid weight loss, the liver shrinks first. That is important because the doctor will need to lift the liver to get to the stomach. The smaller the liver the healthier you are and the less opportunity for complications when lifting the liver.

That said, I agree that it would be difficult to stay on a liquid pre-op for additional time. Perhaps you can call and talk to them to find out if he is going on vacation and whether or not you can adjust your liquid diet it a high Protein diet for e remainder of the pre-op time.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Ok, so my surgeons office called today and scheduled me for Nov. 19th. I have been on the pre-op diet for 5 weeks and have lost 35 pounds. I still have two more weeks until surgery and am sure I can lose the other 15 pounds the doctor wants. Well my surgeon called me tonight and wants to push it out even further. I broke down jn tears because I don't think I have it in me to do the pre-op for four more weeks. I just want this done already.

Mel, I am so sorry to hear about this. When did you start this journey? I ask because I began in August and still don't have a date, still going to a NUT visit, still waiting. It is hard to continue to diet for another month, but maybe you won't have to do it as intensely as you've done in the past.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
