Compression Suits and loose skin

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get some clarity..Im seeing comments here and there about compression suits being used to keep the skin tight thus helping to prevent loose skin. I'm wondering if anyone has used these and if so, do you feel this has helped to reduce the excess skin?? I can see it holding things in place, but Im looking for more information before I start investing money into these. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!

The compression garments are not going to reduce the excess skin in as much as they keep things from jiggling when you move. When I started exercising, it was painful having my belly, moobs and even the skin on the back of my arms jiggling around. I needed a sports bra for my body and this is pretty much what these have done for me.

Over time (I'm almost 2 and a half years out) my loose skin has lessened as time and a little elasticity has helped, but by no means is it gone. I am one of those who is right at the borderline for needing plastics and have opted to just keep with the compression garments.

My grandfather always shared this piece of advice and I've carried it with me throughout life:

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I have used compression bands because I have varicose and spider veins on my extremities. They didn't help one bit, for a condition they are generally thought to help with. Loose skin is mainly the product of weight loss + age + genetic factors. As Pdxman said, compression can only hold you in place, so to speak. My mother lost 50 lbs and her excess skin has lessened in slowly the three years since she lost the weight and started maintaining. Upper body muscle training is probably more likely to help than compression of any kind, but if all else fails, I'd save up for plastics.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
