Never thought I'd hate food!

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks out and experiencing an aversion to food I never thought possible! I was prepared to have no appetite; however, even the mere THOUGHT of eggs literally makes me gag! My gag reflex was pretty bad pre-op, but I've noticed it's worse now post-op. The smell of certain foods makes me gag too. Anyone else experience this change? Sometimes I gag and even vomit a little. When I do eat (not much), I'm able to keep it down so I don't think anything is stuck in there, I'm just worried I should be eating more at this stage and not feeling so "blah."

Psychological perhaps? Are you prone to anxiety attacks?

I'm with you. food really doesn't have any appeal any longer. It is literally just nourishment at this point. I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow. I had a little issue with eggs before surgery, but now, no way. Also, I do get these little episodes every now and then where I feel as if I could get sick. I've mostly noticed it in the mornings, a good hour or so after I've had anything to eat. It passes after a few minutes and I haven't actually gotten sick yet, but it's hard because sometimes I'm in the middle of a treatment with one of my patients and can't really leave the room!

I was thinking it might be psychological, especially when I'm swallowing my pills I think about gagging and then I do. And yes, I'm prone to anxiety attacks!

I used to love eggs and now it doesn't seem like I'll ever want to eat them again! It's funny cause I'll see a commercial for a big juicy burger and it looks so good, but then I can't imagine being able to eat the thing! Lol

This is such a huge change for me considering the way I ate before! I know surgery was the best thing for me, I just want to get to where I love my sleeve. Right now it's a love/hate relationship Lol

I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one going through this. I'm 1.5 months post-op. It's gotten a tad bit better in the past week. At least now I can put food in my mouth! It's so hard to get over the mental aspect of food. Now that I can put food in my mouth again I find myself taking a plate and trying to put as much on it as I did before. 3 bites later and I'm done. I still rely on my Protein Shakes (even those turned me off for a while) to get my Protein in. I wonder how I will ever get the protein in daily without the shakes.< /p>

I'm with you! I too am slowly starting to eat more now as not everything sounds horrible anymore. Like you, a few bites and I'm done (which from what I understand is normal for now). The mental aspect of this surgery has definitely been the hardest for me. I'm trying to change 30 years of thinking in a short amount of time; some days are harder than others. Hang in there, we can do this!

I'm not having any physical reactions to food, for me I know how bad my habits were before and I'm scared to eat and scared that I won't get sick and start bad habits again.

Enjoy this time, for me, about a year out I began to enjoy food again....... Unfortunately this too does pass...... I want to go back to that time.... I now have to watch what I eat and limit the fun stuff...... Good luck

This too will pass in time, enjoy for now, force yourself to eat. I'm a year out, I had that for 10 months...... DARN IT , its gone, I have to be careful now!

That is basically what was said at my monthly meeting last week. We are still in the "honeymoon" phase where food is just nutrition at this point, but we were gently warned that it doesn't last forever!

I had the same reactions as you - my bariatric GI put me on zinc, and told me 90+% of the time. Give it 2-3 days and it will gradually lessen. It worked for me, and I was pitiful. I took it for about a month and I'm not taking/needing it now

It really does get better. i know it doesn't seem like it now! I went through it and remember thinking what the heck have I done?? I literally had nothing but Water for 2 weeks because everything made me nauseous!! Someone told me to start with a chicken thigh. I started with a fried chicken thigh from a local fast food place. I was able to eat a couple bites, after removing the breading of course. The next one was easier and it only got better from there!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
