What do your kids have to say?

Recommended Posts

So many of us got this surgery because we were parents who wanted to do right by our kids. As you lose the weight, is it changing things for your kids? What do they think about it?

At our house:

-no more junk food anywhere in the house

-my son has to eat Protein first (he would have lived on just bread if you let him)

-we went to the state fair where I was able to walk all over and was less tired than him

-my kids are our biggest supporters and they're seeing us succeed. That makes me happy.

Cute NSV. I've been slopping around in 2xl pjs. Loose, unsexy, old. My husband gently reminded me that I could now buy sexy lingerie if I wanted? (If I wanted, not he. Sneaky!) I bought some L sizes pjs. I feel they cling to me too much. I asked my 13-year old if they were too tight. Here's his answer:

"Wow! (Waves hands in hourglass shape) They look just fine to me!"

Hahahahaha!

I have one "normal sized" and one chubby child. Initially I didn't explain fully what the surgery was about (talked more about the hiatal hernia part) because I wanted to be thoughtful about the way I spoke about it with my younger one, the obese one. Well, my husband outed me the day after I got home from the hospital when he was out on a field trip with both of them and explained the surgery to them. Not that I would never tell, I just wanted to say the right thing.

I told the story on my blog (losingitoverhere.wordpress.com) but basically, the next day my son asked "Why did you do it?" and I told him that my doctor and I had discussed it, and based on my family history and current health decided that although I was not yet sick, it was inevitable that if I continued along this path I would be looking at diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure within the next couple of years. That the dieting I had done on and off for 20+ years had messed with my metabolism. And additionally that the surgeries I'd already had in the last 5 years had at least an indirect correlation to my weight.

I told him that I wanted to fix this now while I still have time to enjoy being relatively young. And that I wanted to kick his asteroid in CrossFit (something we do together.)

He digested all of this and said, "Will I have those conditions too?" And I told him, "The difference between you and me is that you are young, you have not yet gone through puberty, and you have time to turn this thing around. But yes, if you continue the way you have been, it's a good possibility. Same genes, buddy." I hope it's given him the right information without scaring the pants off of him.

Because my husband is hoping to be sleeved in December, I really do hope the entire family benefits from the changes in the household. Right now he is their big enabler in the easily-droppable eating habits--the donut run, let's go out for quesadillas stuff. At 10 days post-op, my changes aren't affecting them whatsoever. Yet. Well, except for the time the little rodents ate all of my sf Jello the first week I was home. They heard about that, LOL.

My daughter has actually been really supportive throughout my whole process. She's already figured out what I can and can't eat and encourages me to exercise when I don't really feel like it. She's also chastised me when I've eaten too much and made myself sick. Pitbull/cheerleader, that's my kid.

Her biggest concern is me eventually borrowing her clothes (because I'm constantly pointing out which of her clothes I can't wait to wear) but since I'm over 6 inches taller than her she really has nothing to fear lol!

We did go window shopping this weekend and I ran into lane Bryant to try clothes on, just to see where I'm at size wise and she got frustrated with me because I kept picking stuff that to her, was clearly too big.

I'm really excited to see my son, he's in the Navy and stationed in Guam so I haven't seen him since early summer. I've lost a total of 90 pounds since I last saw him, he's gonna be blown away!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
