How do you know if its dumping or a virus?

WARNING TMI

Haven't been able to eat anything for 3 days without "dumping" what seems like gallons!! Going to try only Gatorade and toast today. Trying hard to stay hydrated.

Did you have the sleeve??? I only had the runs a few times, and wondered the same as dumping is usually not with the sleeve. Never for 3 days in a row. I'd call your surgeon and check.

This sounds more like a virus. Definitely keep hydrating yourself and call your doctor. He will probably tell you to take some Imodium.

Dumping is known as a reaction to sugar or other rich foods, and only usually common with ppl that have had gastric bypass surgery; not sleeve gastrectomy . It sounds like you either have mild food poisoning or a stomach virus. Just drink your fluids and eat very little like you are, if it gets worse or doesn't improve in a few days, you should go to your PCP. I hope you feel better quickly :)

Thank all of you for responding!!

As silly as it sounds, I feel better knowing this is most likely a virus and not a complication of the sleeve.

I contacted my PCP on Friday and she said continue taking Imodium per the directions.

I'll keep drinking, and maybe I'll lose an extra pound or two. ;) There has to be something good to look forward to from this miserable bug!!

I had bad diarrhea for weeks... It was mostly stomach acid. Started taking the protonix again and it went away. This was a stomach acid issue for me.

To keep hydrated..have you drank Gatorade G2..that will help with it and keep your electrolytes up....

Now people who have the sleeve can dump....Not as much as bypass patients but it is known to happen..But they are bouts, not a continual situation like you are feeling.....

Just keep hydrated and take your meds for it and it should soon pass..K

I have had "dumping" and I have the sleeve... Now It only happened once after eating something with 9 gm of sugar ( I had to servings of the item at one time). I learned my lesson with that!

Not true. Some sleevers do experience dumping, although it is not the norm. However, I agree that 3 days of diarrhea is not likely dumping, but some other issue, such as virus, flu, food poisoning, allergy, etc.

I am 2 1/2 weeks or and only had a solid BM once. Everything else has been liquid. I do have IBS so I'm not too concerned but wondering when it will stop. I haven't been taking anything for it. Have you found Emergen-C to be okay with all that fixing?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
