When will I stop being pissed off?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve surgery on the 21st and my weight loss has been great but I have seriously been a moody SoB since about 5 days after. I've read that some hormones (testosterone converted to estrogen ) are stored in fat and they are released with weight loss so basically it seems to me that I'm having a male equivalent of PMS. Everything is irritating me (as I write this auto correct is driving me nuts). Has anyone else had this issue and if so how long does it last and is there anything that I can do or take to resolve it? I am taking my Vitamins (6 Calcium wafers is tough though), focusing on Protein, and trying to stay active. Other than that I'm basically trying to be as civil as possible with everyone because I know that it's nothing that they're doing.

Edit: It also might just be that I get grumpy when I'm hungry. I don't feel hungry but maybe I'm not getting enough calories or something like that.

I was sleeved on the 23rd and I know exactly how you feel. I am feeling super emotional (lonely, angry, frustrated, sad, depressed, you name it) which I normally am not. I still feel like I am in a fog half of the time, which is also driving me nuts. Can't wait to just feel like myself again. But, my weight loss has been great too so I'm thinking this is just a stage we have to get though. It seems like by 4-6 weeks out most people are pretty well back to normal. I can't wait!

Don't jump out of the screen and slap me (lol) but I've heard that increasing exercise really helps. I am getting ready to tackle my treadmill for the first time in a year. My surgery is in 8 days and I'm a mess BEFORE it even happens. Good luck, Michael!

I think that hormones are being released; problem compounded by reduced access to your favorite comfort - food. I was overly emotional for weeks if not months. I tend to sort of shut down when I get in that headspace and i recall the world seeming kinda gray and muted. I like to tell people I didn't start feeling human until about 12 weeks out, so I am guessing that is when my mood started to stabilize too. I have gone through ups and downs since then too - don't get me wrong - haha, but that hormal triggered mood change was the first few months.

Once you are cleared for activity - start doing it. Walking - whatever you are cleared for. Regular activity is the best mood enhancer I know. And like I always say "keep your eye on the prize" - remind yourself it is temporary and necessary step to get you to your ultimate dreams and goals. I promise it gets better.

I think that I can start using the elliptical next week so hopefully that will help.

The pre op diet may have been the toughest part, other than my mood things have been much easier post op.

I take meds for anxiety, so I may not have the answer. I had 5 weeks of liquids and found it very difficult to be upbeat!! My daughter who had the same surgery before me, told me that if I did the 5 weeks correctly, I never had to do that again. On top of that, my surgery was the 12th of Nov. so I was still on liquids for Thanksgiving, etc. It does get better. They had me walking the first day, so I tried to increase that as I could. I think I was mad because I couldn't have some of the things I wanted to eat. Now that I'm almost a year out, I realize that it was easier not to eat the first bite than have only a little bit of some foods. Take it one day at a time, and if you need to one hour at a time. It will be worth it!!! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
