Doc says 4 weeks before lifting or exercise, except walking. I feel great and my external sutures are almost completely gone at 19 days post op. I purchased an elliptical machine and am chomping at the bit to use it. What's the consensus?

I know, I want to start exercising too, but I'm going to wait a month then hire a personal trainer. There is plenty of time to do it, no need to tempt fate.

Listen to your surgeon, unless you were in the same graduating class in med school, and have done as many sleeves as your surgeon.

You might be feeling great and have no pain but it takes 30 days for your muscles to heal on the inside. By not listening to your doctor and exercising too early you could disrupt the internal healing process and set yourself back weeks or even back in the OR. Just keep walking and taking it easy- before you know it you will be cleared for all exercise and breaking in the new eliptical.

I started on the elyptical machine 5 days after surgery at low intensity, not much different than walking (actually less impact on the body). I currently workout everyday with about 30 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of weight lifting. Had my gastric sleeve done in Cancun Oct 11 this year. The whole "listen to your doctor" seems like such lame thing to say - they know about the same (or even less) than anyone who does some research on line. Just because someone has a "doctor" title does not make him the smartest person in the world but that seems to be the usual consensus on this forum.

This is the smartest post I've seen to date. Doctors are not gods. That's why they call what they do "practicing medicine". ;-). Most doctors are not trained on nutri tuition or hormones unless they specialize in it. I have a wellness doctor that has helped me learn all about my hormones and how they assisted in making me have a hard tie losing weight. Also what I eat was contributing to it. First doctor that I have found that was knowledgeable in this arena. He's still helping me today. Love my Dr. Tice in LV, NV!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
