Truth about protein...

Recommended Posts

I am curious about the "protein requirement". I do not believe I ate 60+ grams of Protein before sleve. Or at least I did not really track that. Now I am speaking pre-diet to surgery. Is there a medical reason for this or is it because protein helps with the weighy loss and its more healthy? I am having a hard time right now getting that much protein in and I want to know if something medically could go wrong.

I'm pre op and I eat more than 60 grams only because the Weight Loss program I was in stressed a lot of Protein. It fills you up. Depending on how far out you are you won't be able to get that much in but do the best you can. In other words if you are still swollen you can't get that much in.

I found a Protein caoculator here: http://www.healthcalculators.org/calculators/protein.asp

My NUT used a similar formula; she increased my recommend intake to help recover from surgery. Once I was a few months out, she dropped it back.

Protein helps maintain muscle and helps the body repair itself as well as build muscle. You very well may have consumed over 60g of protein prior to surgery you would be surprised. I looked at a label of organic chicken breast the other day to see there was 28g in just 4 oz I couldn't believe it. Also, the protein makes you feel fuller longer so it helps fight your hunger as well. I average 60g-80g per day

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
