Is there anyone that does NOT have trouble eating or drinking.

Recommended Posts

I read all of these posts and i just don't get it. I have been able to drink since day 1. I can also eat my soft foods in just a couple of minutes instead of the 15-20 minutes that I've heard its taking many. I'm starting to worry that maybe I'm pushing and shouldn't be or something's wrong.

never had trouble drinking. but eating, that is different; i could eat yogurt anytime and at any speed, but other things took time and besides i was practicing for later. now with real food i have to be conscious about chewing and waiting between bites.

There are a couple of factors here to think about. One is swelling - some people swell up worse than others post-op, which affects your ability to get anything down. The other is lack of sensation. When most of your stomach was cut away, most of the nerve endings were cut as well, so until you heal, your ability to feel full will be disrupted. So, take it slow, measure portions, and don't try to progress too quickly. You'll feel much more restriction as you begin to move to more solid food.< /p>

Wait till ur on regular foods. It's easier to eat 4oz of yogurt than it is to eat 4oz of steak. I'm 3 1/2 mths post op and can only eat about 2-3oz of a TOTAL meal (including Protein, veggies and a carb).

I'm hungry again in 2 hrs, but thats beside the point!

They took out 85% of ur stomach. Don't worry. You won't be able to eat like you did pre op. I promise...

I am two weeks out today. I've not really had trouble drinking. Though I do have to take my time with the Protein drinks or I get too full, too fast, and that is unpleasant.

I can eat an entire 5oz Greek yogurt fairly quickly. Same with cottage cheese. But I deliberately try to go slow.

I was cleared to add more foods today so I am eating tuna right now. I've only had about one ounce and I'm feeling pretty satisfied. This pleases me greatly!

I am glad you posted this Pjackson. I was just talking about this with my sister about an hour ago. I had surgery the day after you did, and so far I have had no trouble with anything. I am almost drinking like I used to before surgery. I am still on a full liquid diet, but can have light yogurt, SF pudding and SF Jello. I can easily sit down and eat a 5.3 oz cup of Dannon fit and light greek yogurt in about 7 minutes. I feel full afterwards but doesn't hurt or come back up.

I also can't tell when I am hungry or not. I have this feeling in my tummy all the time like I am on verge a stomach growl, but it never materializes and settles down. It doesn't go away after I eat. IDK... I guees my sleeve and I have just not gotten on the same page yet. So I try to eat based on time, calories, and Protein.

Thank you to all the other posters. Especially the one who explained about differences in swelling. I know heal quickly from surgery. So this could explain a lot. And I am glad to hear that yogurt goes down so much easier than when I advance to dense Protein. I will just keep following my staged eating plan and take it day by day.

Thanks,

Bonnie

Sounds like acid build up. Are you taking your acid blocker? You need to! That's what I feel like when I forget mine. Excess acid will also mimic hunger "pains". Keep that in mind!

Wow. So nice to hear that someone is like myself. I truly feel blessed that I haven't had any trouble with drinking or the small eating I get to do. My pain has only been from gas in the beginning. Everything has just been so simple for me. My doc said there were lots of things in my favor that could've contributed to that. But, when i just keep reading how many are struggling, I just kept thinking is there ANYONE else that doesn't have problems. So, thanks so much for sharing.

No trouble at all getting fluids in so far. I have not tried anything mushy yet. Got sleeved yesterday.

I was sleeved on 10/22 and have been going thru pretty much the same thing. I even asked the surgeon the other day if he took out as much as he was supposed too! Lol I have to force myself to only drink the 4 - 6 oz at a time so I don't over do it. And since moving to purée on wed I find myself eating my 4 tablespoons of purée and then looking to the bottom of the bowl to see if there's more! Yesterday I ate my puréed meal at 5 and by 8 or 9 I found myself 'cruising' thru the kitchen 'looking'! I had to force myself to keep drinking so as not to indulge in all the kids Halloween candy! I sure hope it gets easier!

I was sleeved in April. I wax able to eat and drink everything as scheduled and never had a problem with any food. My stomach tells me when I'm full and I've lost 90 lbs. you're perfectly normal.

Bonnie! I'm Bonnie too. :) pjackson and bonbon, I was sleeved on 10/17, right around the same time as both of you, and I feel the exact same! It was freaking me out that everyone else was having such trouble and feeling full when I was able to drink and eat even while I was in the hospital. Now that I am home, I feel like a bottomless pit... like I could eat anything. Don't get me wrong, I don't actually do it... I keep up with the Portion Control and the diet. But I always feel like I could comfortably eat more. I keep telling myself it's head hunger, but to me, it feels real... like my tummy is empty and needs something. :\ I just keep trying to ignore it and tell myself it's because I'm on liquids and hopefully when I'm on pureed or soft this "hunger" will go away and I can feel full for once!

I cannot tell you how nice it was to hear that there are others like me....lol. I was seriously afraid i had a leak and everything was just leaking into my gut leaving me a bottomless pit.........lol......NOT REALLY. But, that is what it felt like. I start soft foods on Friday. I've had oatmeal, tuna salad, cream of wheat, refried Beans and eggs. So far the only thing I had an issue with were the eggs. Caused a little bit of queasiness and acid reflux.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
