Today was my companies March Birthday party....

I'm still in the soft/mushie phrase, and for what I've read cake is not on the list.

So I'm standing there feeling awkward, as everyone around me to talking about how good the cake is. Then my boss notices I'm not eating, and decides to annouce his findings to everyone, like I'm a art exhibit. I've managed to stay on my plan, but it was really hard to stand my ground when everyone is looking at you, expecting you to eat.

My excuse, while true, was that I didn't want to ruin my appetite because I hadn't eaten lunch yet. Lord, that cake looked good.

Any advice for future situations???

Good for you! I think what you did was the best advice I could give. Just say you don't want any for whatever reason. Hang in there!

How nice of your boss to put you on the spot like that. I'm sure most of us will be put in a similar situation some time or another. It's embarrassing too, to be the only one not eating cake, to be the only one with most the food left on your plate, to be the only one who doesn't drink something with dinner.

I would have just smiled and said I was trying to watch what I eat. If these social events are something that happens frequently and you can plan for them, try to have something else on hand you can eat, so you don't stand out as the "empty-handed" one. :)

Fantastic job sticking to your plan!!!

Another suggestion for those cake-y times is to say that you've recently started eating low-carb, or that you've discovered you can't eat gluten, or something like that. I've noticed that since I've been trying to make better food choices, when we have potlucks at work and I'm not eating something that everyone else is, it is pointed out as well. And if I merely say I'm watching what I eat, invariably someone says something like, "oh one little bite won't hurt" or "I made this last night, you've just GOT to try it" or something like that.

At this point I've decided not to tell anyone that I'm going to be banded, so I'm lining up my "little white lies" now.

Tell your boss that cake makes you soooooooooooo tired that you can't eat it during working hours. No boss wants an unproductive employee. You can also bring in a fruit salad to share when the announce the next party. Many people are pre-diabetic/diabetic and others don't care for sweet cakes and would welcome the healthy addition.

A fruit salad sounds really good. We have another party on Friday, I'll make sure I bring so alternative dessert.

Great Idea!!!

I have also told people that my Dr. has me on a really strict diet right now. That seems to work also.

It is not a lie either, I am sure my band Dr. would not like me to be eating cake, even though I could really go for a peice of cake right now.

You'll find that if you put some on a plate, push it around some, cut it up a little, people don't realize you aren't actually eating it. They see you get it and then then don't care, it's when you don't take it they realize you aren't eating it. Then when you get a chance throw it away! It works every time for me!

That's a great idea! Knowing myself, I don't think I could resist taking just one bite, then that would lead to two bites, and so on...

But it really is a wonderful idea.

Tell them you just found out you're a borderline diabetic. That'll shut them up!

Be careful, though. If someone you work with happens to be diabetic and you say something like that, they're likely to ask you questions about how high your sugars are usually, and whether you're on medications yet, and what kind of diet your doctor has you on. I work with 3 diabetics out of 5 people in my department. They'd smell that lie a mile away.

As a business owner, I have venders invite me to lunch a lot. I even in my preband days said I really don't have time. As for cake or any other sweets, tell them that would require me another 30 minutes on the tread mill (or what ever cardio you're doing). Drs orders sounds good also.

Good restraint!!!
