How do I cope with sitting around?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded on 2/28. It has been six days since my surgery. The first couple of days were horrible, but it has been getting progressively better as time goes on. Yesterday I woke up and felt great. I decided to clean up the house a little, did the dishes, dusted, vaccumed. Then I felt horrible the rest of the day and was up most of the night last night. How much is too much? It didn't seem like I was pushing myself too hard physically. I just get tired of sitting around the house feeling useless. But at the same time if I do something I hurt afterwards. Walking only goes so far. What other activities can I do to keep me busy without the pain?

I too was banded on 2/28! I felt so great yesterday I cleaned the bathroom (just the countertop and the toilet, not much). But last nite, I woke up in pain again. Hadn't done that in a couple days. I guess I overdid it a little.

I think most things you did were fine. I would not suggest vaccuuming tho, that seems a tad too strenuous.

I went the bookstore yesterday and got some new books to read. I've also been catching up on all the pay-per-view movies I've been missing. :) But walking is very important, and I just try to do three short walks a day. My mom and I have gone shopping the past two days, and walking around the store looking at things seems to distract me. I try to hit a new place to walk every day- a new park, a new path. Whatever to keep things interesting.

Jack had some great ideas I am taking note! My surgery is in a few weeks. I plan to do a little scrapbooking myself. I also bought some fashion magazines to plan the outfits I will be able to wear again soon! Best of luck to you! :)

I was also banded on 2/28! Overall, I feel pretty good, although I get tired easily and have the runs. I have been walking the mall (because it is too cold to walk outside). I can't wait til spring!

I just got banded yesterday! I hope within six days I can do more than sit around. I am on Spring Break and hope I can walk to classes and lift my heavy school bag starting next monday.

Hi Exude (Jason)!

I don't think you should have too much trouble going to class. You might, however, want to ask some friends to help you carry your books. My dr. told me not to lift anything heavier than 15 lbs for 4 weeks.

I had my surgery on 02/27, I went back to work 5 days later and today (day8) I do not have any shoulder pain and only a little port pain. I am really sick of full liquid diet...does everyone feel that way??

Yes!!!!!! I do!! And I still have 2 more weeks of liquids.

How long does the port pain tend to last?? My pain is not really around the incisions but more internal. I also feel like i have heartburn whenever I eat.

I've been feeling the shoulder pain two days after post-op... which is weird since I thought it would be right after.

The port pain I still have as well. Internal, not necessarily where the incision on the skin is. Do you guys get the hiccups/burps sometimes too?

I was banded 2/28, I posted earlier in this thread... I was feeling pretty dang good for 6 days post op but then the gas moved to the middle of my chest and made it hard to breathe (because it was under an incision), it's a tad better today but not by much. My port area is still pretty tender to the touch and I still can't sleep on that side. AND YES I am friggin sick of liquids!!! :tired

But hey, 19 lbs gone forever, can't complain too much I guess!

Wow, this is neat. I thought I was the only one. I felt so guilty that the simplest things made me so tired. On Tuesday, 5 days post-op, I volunteered at a dinner at church. I was pooped, and very sore. But today I feel much better. I didn't even take any pain meds. Good thing too cause I have to go back to work tomorrow.

And the little hiccup/burp things are a bit uncomfortable. I get so worried that the pain I feel is the band slipping. Hope that doesn't last very long.

I agree that the vaccuming was too much. It's the pushing/pulling motion that gets you. I was able to dust, cook, fold laundry, and wash dishes but that was about it for several weeks. I too was told no lifting for 6-8 weeks but was given an 8 pound limit (a gallon of milk weights 8 pounds). I was told nothing that pulled the abs. So no lifting, no working out, no vaccuming. I have a 51/2 year old, she had just turned 4 when I had surgery, so the lifting was hard for me to follow. It gets better each day. By the way my gas pain kicked in on day 3. ~Mandy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
