How much "stretching" can be expected post surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am now one year out...it was a HARD year, but I eat fairly well, exercise regularly, and overall am happy with my weight loss... This morning for Breakfast, I had an omelette made with TWO eggs, ground sausage and cheese. No carbs... I am pleasantly sated and not over full... Should I be concerned as six months ago, I could only eat ONE egg? I don't want to get into that slippery slope of stretching my sleeve too much... What do you think?

I don't think you've stretched your sleeve..

Your stomach naturally relaxes over the year.

The key is to do exactly what you are doing, eat until satisfied and don't overfill to discomfort.

I'm 7 months out and I eat 3 eggs for breakfast. Now that is a lot but for some reason I can eat eggs without any problem. I don't eat anything with them but that is a typical breakfast. I can eat 2 and be okay but I usually get hungrier by lunch if I only do two. Other foods I can eat very little of. Everyone is different and every sleeve is different. I don't feel like I have stretched my sleeve, I still have LOTS of restriction with other foods, just not so much with eggs.

I am 26 days post op and I'm wondering if not leaving adequate time between getting all the liquids in also stretches your stomach out? I finally feel hungry and am scared I've caused the pouch to stretch out already

I was sleeved 10/21 and I only drink smoothies and Water. Are smoothies considered a liquid or food.

liquid for sure. but you can change up the consistency to test your stomach's ability to start handling purees and mashies.

At my 3 month post op check up, my surgeon asked me if I was eating more than a fistful amount at my meals. To me, my fist looks to be about 4-5 oz. I can definitely eat about 6-8 oz at a time depending on the consistency of what I'm eating. My surgeon told me to really try to stick to the fistful rule when eating in order to avoid stretching. I have made more of an effort since that appointment to stick to only about 4-5 oz at a time...even though I can definitely eat more!

Im terrified that taking 1 bite too much I will eventually stretch my sleeve (im 3 1/2 mths out). Not sure how im gunna be ay 1 yr out. My dr said that the stretchy part of the stomach was taken out but over a year the capacity can grow to hold 8oz, but never more. Seems like alot now but originally my stmach could hole about 5x that much, so I should be relieved.

Im also a little panicked that my sleeve will stretch. I can still only eat 1 egg/1 pc bacon. When that gets to 2 eggs, I will reevaluate

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
