What did you feel when you awoke from surgery?

Recommended Posts

I woke up talking and joking as if I had never been out (continued with the same conversation.) But then suddenly, I realized I was in pain. I incredulousy announced, "Hey, I feel like I was just knifed!" The surgeon said, "You WERE." They all kind of laughed, and then I remembered what I had done. I was then so happy to be alive, and on my way!!

The first thing I remember is being wheeled from the PACU to my room. I don't remember leaving the OR or being in the PACU. My nurse told me the first thing I did was feel my body (as in to like feel that it was still there) and exclaim "wow I am effing alive" except I actually used the F word.

well i was on the table for over 3 hours (i had MAJOR scar tissue issues from my 'zipper' gall bladder scar)...

the first words out of my mouth - "My butt hurts" ... those OR tables are not designed to be flat on your back/butt for over 10 minutes much less 3 hrs!!

2nd phrase - get this out of my nose.

apparently i am a cranky bitch when under ...

i am very very lucky i had no gas pains ... SO very lucky and thank God for that cause i am such a wimp.

Well I just did this a week ago so it is still pretty vivid in my memory. I remember waking up to people yelling my name and telling me to wake up. I was very out of it and they had put my C-PAP machine on me while I was in recovery.

As soon as I was awake I remember I knew my stomach area hurt and I could feel there was pain there, but I certainly didn't understand how much.

Once I was in my room is when I had the SERIOUS pain, but one morphine shot and I was good from there with nothing but the nauesua stuff.

I also just had mine done a week ago so the memory is very vivid! I woke up and could not breathe!! Could not get a deep breath and was a little panicky! Only took me a few minutes to come out of it, but it still was scary. 8 days out and I would do it again in a second.

The first memory I have is me coughing a few times and having an oxygen mask on me. Then my nurse was over me stroking my hair telling me it was all over and that I did great. I had no pain on my stomache, but oddly enough my lower back hurt like crazy. It hurt to lay or to sit. That was my biggest pain that day. Gas pains started up later that night. I went home approx. 3 hours after my surgery and dont remember much from that day since I slept most of it. I was very drowsy and out of it most of the day. Around 6pm I kinda snapped out of it and actually had conversations with my family. I did take my pain medicine cause I didnt want to be in pain...only took it until the next afternoon since it started making me sick to my stomach and my biggest fear was throwing up.

I woke up in a lot of pain with gas mask in ICU I asked for more pain meds and got them I was also very tired.

After an hour I wanted to take a walk so I wouldnt get the gas pain, but the nurses and docs were shocked cause they havent seen anyone trying to walk so early after the surgery:-))

I woke up a lot clearer than I did after the choley is November. I did really start coughing, though, then had stress incontinence! Sheese! No pain, though, but I don't remember much after that, but I think I woke up and was ready to go home, pretty quickly.

Mine was a day surgery. I went into the OR and 45 minutes later I was in recovery. I woke up almost immediately upon arriveing in recovery, I couldn't talk yet and everything was really blurry. I pointed to my ring finger to ask for my husband and the one nurse thought I wanted my ring and the other one figured it out and said no she wants her DH. I felt a little sore in my abdominal area, I did not have bad gas pain at all, but the repairing of my hiatal hernia is what made me super sore for about a week. I didn't actually feel any real pain till the next day. I was walking within 10 minutes of waking up and 20 minutes later after drinking a cup of Water I was released to go home and get some rest.

Thanks so much eveyone for your replies. I am learning alot of what to possibly expect after surgery.

When some of you mentioned back pain, well, that really bothers me because I have a bad back and when most surgeons do the surgery with your legs apart so they can get between them, I hope they don't overstretch because I don't want to be in so much pain from my back and hips cuz they are bad also with arthritis.

I have had some big surgeries too and I wake up from them usually not wanting the oxygen mask on me. I have severe sleep apnea so I hope they take that into consideration as well. Speaking of which, would the pressure from the CPAP mask cause more gas pains?? Hmmm.

Also, I read about a few of you having a hiatal hernia and had it repaired at the same time. Will the Mexico docs do that for you with no extra charge. I am planning on going to Dr. Ortiz in TJ.

Thanks again everyone and keep them coming! :o)

Peace,

Judy

I woke up when I think they were moving me from the or to a recovery room bed - all I know is I felt like I was on a sheet and they were heaving/lifting me onto another table. And of course in my twisted mind i just remember thinking oh my god i am so fat and i know i'm killing them trying to move me and please don't drop me

(I have always had a huge huge fear of anyone trying to pick me up - I almost go ballistic) - after that i remember waking up in my room and feeling out of it and wanting to walk cuz everyone tells you to walk. I kept trying and getting dizzy so they made me stay in bed. not much pain but my last night in the hotel i was missing that adjustable hospital bed - it hurt to try to get up.

I was really disoriented and confused. I wasn't in any pain. I didn't believe I had surgery. I just remember being thirsty and they gave me ice.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
