When hunger scares me...

Recommended Posts

I find I have several days where I could eat and eat and eat. It scares the bajeezus outta me! Although I don't go over my 1200 calories, I feel like things aren't satisfying me. Maybe I need to find something new or eat things at a different time. I try to tell myself it's just me being 'bored' and not a genuine hungry feeling. Then I hear the doctor saying in the back of my head, 'Don't wait to eat until you're starving!' I know that over time, my stomach will naturally stretch. And I don't over eat to the point of being in such horrible pain. I hope this is a normal thing I'm experiencing, because I'd sure hate to ruin such a fabulous gift given to me! Thoughts, anyone?

You are much further along than me, but I too find that my intake varies a lot. I plotted my net calories on myfitnesspal and I see a cyclical pattern where several days of lower calories are followed by a few days of higher calories. Is that what's happening to you? If so, I wonder if that isn't normal?

Yes! I have days where I may hit 500 and days where I'm teetering on 1000. Odd how that happens. On the weekends, I find it easier to eat, because I'm not inundated with patients at work. While M-F, I can't exactly eat at my desk because everyone will see. I think maybe I need to incorporate another Protein shake or two. I normally just have one in the morning.

I worried about the high days until I saw the low days. I think it's good to vary calories so your body doesn't get used to one level. Our bodies adapt quickly otherwise. After a week where I was very hungry for no reason, i added veggies back in to fill me up but with low calories and it's working.

So maybe as long as you're losing, calorie cycling, and making good choices and not junk, perhaps you are okay?

Talking with my nonop friends, this sounds pretty normal. I actually asked them about this because I had this before I was even doing preop diet. Many of them said they had days when they were just hungrier than other days. I never understood it, but my nutritionist talks about if I am feeling hungry (truly hungry and not head hunger) that I should up my lean Proteins a little.

But I think GG is right. If you are bouncing back and forth between 500-1000, I bet you would be ok.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
