Usually you are on liquids for 10 days to 2 weeks post op. I would suggest buying some Atkins Protein Drinks and telling them you're doing atkins. Then if you want some chicken broth, they won't say anything. Good luck with your surgery, I love this board too!!!!

Don't ask us, ask your dr. please!! I was able to do Boost/Ensure right after surgery, but not everyone's dr is cool with that.

Also, Slimfast are TERRIBLE. They are all sugar. Like others said, do an Atkins or something like it if your dr is all ok with it.

Otherwise, you are all about broths. By the by...you will be really, really tired. You going to be ok going on this trip?? It is going to be REALLY hard to hide the fact you had surgery just three days post op. Think about it.....

Thanks for all the replies. My post-op sheet says liquids for 24-48 hrs post-op then soft foods for 4weeks.I will probably use the Atkins excuse.I did not even think of that! The trip to the beach will be "a lazy weekend " So hopefully I will be OK.It will probably be easier than at home because my kids will be entertained by their cousins.Plus I have a wonderful husband that does anything and everything for our kids.

I know Slimfast has a lot of sugar but that is what I did post op, and they worked great. I pretty much hated everything liquid by 3-4 days out, so I wasn't exactly overindulging in them. :D

Straight after my op I was offered yoghurt which surprised me as all the paper work they gave me said clear liquid. My doc told me to try and stay with the Clear Liquids as along as I could but if I really need to, I could have slimfat as it contains the right amount of Vitamins. I lost 3st following the slim fast diet long before my op but I liked my food too much to continue, but now I have slimfast a lot mainly after a fill.

If it were me, I'd bow out saying you feel like you're coming down with that flu that's going around <cough><cough>:sick and insist that your hubby go ahead with the kids to the beach. Perfect time for you to get some much needed rest with no stress about what others are thinking. But, hey, that's just me!!

Slimfast does have a low carb option that has more Protein than their high Protein. It has 20grams of protein and 2 g net carbs. It is not so bad tasting and easy to find in the stores. I compared the ingredients to the Atkins and they are very simular.

Good Luck,

Wendy

Also, you can try Isopure which is a clear Protein liquid that I drank after surgery.

Just a thought...but...how about the day you're supposed to leave you "suddenly feel flu-ish" and send the kids along with the in-laws? So you and hubby could have some quiet time alone and you don't have to worry about covering up the diet/surgery?

**ooops...just realized that Terridoodle suggested something very similar :D**

Everybody heals differently, I was completely fine and back to work 3 days post op. Very slightly sore but no one could tell I just had surgery. I recovered from this surgery amazingly well, you might too! But have a back up plan available just in case.

As a mother of 3, I agree with this post.

I did just that, when I had my surgery. My wonderful husband took our 3 kids on a camping trip to the lake with his family. I stayed home for rest.

If you can get out of this at all, do it for your health.

They WILL survive and have fun without you.

I suggest buy a couple different Protein drinks and see which one you like the best. Atkins I like and Isopure. Go to a GNC or health food type store. You can find High Protein (like 40grams in one drink) low carb, low sugar drinks.

I was only put on Clear liquids for two days before the surgery and by the end of week one I was on mushies. I had full liquids from day 1 out of hospital. Doctor wanted me on Protein Drinks at minimum because he said it is not healthy to be on clear liquids that long, that I need nutrition.

I know each doctor has different rules, but that is what I did.

Day one out of hospital, I had campbells creamy tomatoe Soup at hand (love the creamy one, not regular!), chocolate and vanilla Protein shakes (you can add ice to them and use a hand blender to make them frothy and thick, even a banana), chicken and stars campbells Soup at hand (the chicken bits and stars are so small they could fit through a straw), popsicles, Jello, broth (I HATE BROTH), and I pureed some foods. Like regular vegetable soup, I pureed down.

These are just some ideas. You can get creative. You should be trying to get in at least 65-75 grams of protein a day. That is so you stay strong and your hair stays in place (hehe) and you will be less hungry.

You can read my previous posts as to what I have eaten. I also write out my entire hospital experience too.

:D

Have you tried to freeze the Slimfast? I take it out the freezer and run it under some warm Water and then open it with a can opener and let it slide out and eat it like ice cream. Lasts longer and tastes great. Waiting to be banded. Getting heart test tomorrow.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
