Hard to eat foods

Recommended Posts

As a vet, what foods do you still find hard to eat. It gives you an uncomfortable feeling. It brings on the slimes. Words of regret are on your tongue. For me it is chicken cooked too dry. No matter how much I chew or how much eaten (2-4 oz), I am very uncomfortable afterwards for at least 30 minutes, especially if combined with Brussels sprouts, broccoli or asparagus that are not soft enough. I hate the "new post op" blocked feeling. Not so much the slimes, but the blocked feeling in chest. And you? It doesn't matter how far vet you are, please share.

My worst is still any type chicken breast. Dense Protein always gives me that blocked feeling and of not very careful I can get actual slimes and throw up. Rarely. Don't eat much.

Another thing weird for me is stuffing/cornbread dressing as in turkey dressing. Any kind of this as well as actual cornbread ( if you are southern you know what this is). It somehow swells up in my tummy. Just a few bites can make me totally miserable.

Too much Pasta or rice is the worst, but anything, if i have one or two bites too many, I get the slimes and really don't feel good for a while....some times an hour or a little more. I try and always under eat my sleeve!!

I have a few.

fruit skin, such as apple skins. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes not.

Tortillas.

Greasy food.

It's either spaghetti sauce with meat or the Pasta, not sure which.

Still can't tolerate much dairy other than hard cheeses and Greek yogurt.

Margaritas. I think it's the sweet and sour mix.

Good advice from everyone. I do find it a little random of when dense chicken (dry) is going to lead to blocked feeling and slimes. Random, I tell you. I have to pay closer attention. It is not just about under eating the sleeve (good advice though). sometimes I can eat 5 oz and sometimes only 2 oz, depending on the exact density and moist level. It is hard to tell in advance. My wife generally always gets the chicken right. However, eating chicken made by others is a game of Russian roulette.

Nearly three years into this and I've yet to find something I can't eat. I don't know why, but I have an easier time with my stomach (by quite a bit) post-sleeve than I did before. I haven't thrown up, slimed, etc., once. I remember vividly about a year ago I drank Water somehow slightly too fast (though I can normally gulp it down fine, pretty much like pre-op at this point) and it got stuck painfully for a few minutes. That sucked. Anyone still going through that on a regular basis has my utmost sympathy!! That all being said, if I eat too much of anything potato-y (boiled, fried, baked, whatever), I can easily get uncomfortably full, but it doesn't hurt. Just feels like that Thanksgiving oh-god-I-can't-believe-I-ate-that-much feeling from only a few bites. Still surprises me every time. The sleeve feels so normal to me that I never remember it's there until I'm like, OH OOPS I CAN'T EAT THAT MUCH LOL.

I have a sleeved friend locally here who is three+ years out and still can't eat sausage or fatty meats/foods or she'll vomit. Same for spaghetti or Pasta -- she can literally eat like one or two noodles and be ill. I just can't relate, and we had our surgeries by the same clinic LOL.

Nearly 2 years out and I can eat any food but my tummy used to be "old ironsides" and now spicy or acidic food is irritating.

The key for me is small portions, chewed well and not mixed with beverages. I dont eat bread but when i do mixed with Water or other food it is so easy to get too full really fast.

I am wearing a very tight compression garment post plastic surgery so am being more careful about eating close to bedtime due to risk of reflux but so far its

Ok

8 months out, the only two meats I have a problem with are chicken breast and sausages. Now I only chicken thighs (which I find tastier anyway) and I peel the skin off my sausages and eat the meat (happy dog!!) As I still have a lot of weight to get off, I haven't really pushed trying processed carbs much. Quinoa and buckwheat are ok for me very occasionally. Red meat is fine as long as its cooked on the rare side.

3 years out and I still have plenty of no-gos, however I have turned that to my advantage and whenever I feel that I am eating a little too wontonly, I eat a sticker food :). Potato anything is a losing bet, more than a single bite and it's like feeding white rice to a pidgeon :( Dense greens in a salad are wonderful, but I can only eat 4 bites before having to stop for at least 30 minutes. It has been known to take me 6 hours to finish a nutritious salad :/ And during that time it just sits in my chest, ummph.

As for queasies/slimes, eggs are a real gamble, sometimes they slide right down delicious and nutritious, other times the mere smell has my mouth watering in the bad way. Hot dogs are my favorite junk food but more than 2 bites and I'm courting danger, painful embarrassing, slimy danger. And hamburger patties are a great source of Protein, delicious, but one bite and it's sitting in my chest the rest of the night. I have had beautiful organic delicious cheeseburgers take me 36 hours to finish! My workaround for that is to make cheeseburger salad, but alas, see above regarding dense greens.

With my new autoimmune protocol diet I'm adhering to right now, the big issue of course are the greens.

I could have written this post Dee! :)

Nothing is a no-go for me. But I still weigh and measure my food. Just the other day I had some leftover lean ground beef and I was just going to pop the whole thing in the micro with a little cheese and call it dinner. Looked at, and decided I better measure it. Came out to 5.4oz of ground beef. I cut it back to exactly 3oz, topped with 10grams of cheese and that was my dinner. I would have NEVER been able to stuff all 5.4oz in at once. The leftover 2.4 went in the next morning's egg beater omelet.

I also have never thrown up, slimed or anything else similar to that. What is slime? Just extra saliva or things that come from your stomach back up? Sorry I'm unfamiliar with sliming.

November 1 will be my 2 year surgiversary. It has been a while since I have posted mainly I think I have been in denial as I get hungry and I have gained weight :( but, yesterday I ate my turkey slices for lunch and sitting on my desk was a small pkg of candy corn, figured I needed a little pick me up, I ate the 6 candy corns that came in the package...within 10 mins of eating them my co-worker brought me 2 pieces of sushi to share, I globed on wasabi, ate them and WOAH. Instantly my mouth began to create saliva like never before I ran to the bathroom and well, shall we say it was not fun, over and over it kept filling up. I did not vomit it was the closest in 2 years that I have come, but I think that was my version of "sliming". My no-go really is just combinations of foods. Garbage gut, net result is ugly.

Camper, come hang out with us, we know how easy it is to get off track and gain.

I am pretty much an Iron stomach again... sometimes hot and spicy may irritate the princess....it has taken me a couple of years to get back to being able to eat hot pepper. ... and Pasta can really fill me up extra fast. I don't eat it much, but it always surprises me at how it "sticks to my ribs." I cook a half portion, and end up leaving most of it on the plate. Other things may or may not bother me... apple skins for quite a while...just couldn't stand the texture. I have gotten the slimes a few times... usually after layering Protein and other ingredients ... sliming is what ^Happy^ described...pretty sure it is just saliva, but thick and "slimy", I don't know if the body is trying to make it easy for the offending parties to leave the premises, or just a "stop what you are doing...NOW" thing. Too bad more junk does not cause slime!

So "sliming" is just extra saliva? Not actually throwing up?

Thanks for the description, just never had that at all, and honestly really glad to be able to say that. :)

Yep hang with us, there are a lot of us vets who know about how easy it is to regain some weight. Don't give up, you can fight back and keep working your sleeve!

For the last few times in recent months, if I have a "slime" episode, the rest follows. Eck!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
