Has anyone ever heard of developing a leak after 4 weeks ? When are we considered out of the woods so to speak ?

I have seen threads where people were months out, as far as 6 months. I am sure it's not the norm, but it could happen.

It can depend on how you treated the sleeve when you first had it..Sometimes people rush to the second and third levels of eating before the staples are even healing around your stomach....It is easy to have a leak and then the fun really begins..I know been there...not fun at all...

The thing is to follow your teams advice and stick to their plan esp. at the beginning....Once scar tissue forms around the sleeve it will be almost impossible to have a leak.....

My dr said that after 2 weeks the chances go WAY down...after 4 weeks dang near unheard of......he made it clear that everyday that passes the chances for complications decrease dramatically

I am so glad he gave you that kind of reassurance...But there are many instances where people have had a leak up to 6 months out....Like I said before it can happen..It happened to me which led to a five month stay in the hospital....It was less then a week out..But it lasted 4 1/2 months before they were finally able to fix it...

The true answer is to take care of your sleeve especially at the beginning and there is a very good chance it won't happen to you...Sometimes **** happens like with me and there was nothing I did..The stitches just let loose..... :)

My hospital has a late leaker it's treating, sorry I don't know how far out they are. My doctor said they don't know what caused it. No risk factors with the patient. No over eating, no over use of Advil type products. The patient was being treated for pneumonia that would not clear up, then they realized it was a leak effecting the lungs. It is possible it was a perforated ulcer, but they don't know. Scary stuff.

I wonder if coughing with pneumonia is a factor there.....sometimes weird things just happen eh!

Could these cases have happened earlier on and were just discovered later ?

No there is no time to lose..you get septic extremely fast and if unchecked....Your chances of coming out of it are slim to none...Trust me..I almost died and I had a leak for only 4 days at that point...It is a dangerous thing to have....

What are symptoms of a leak?

The first signs of a leak is fatigue! Next your temperature rises and continues....Then you turn white as a ghost and pass out..In my case the Fluid started to leak out of my staples....Okay, went out like a sprinkler...It was very scary for me...If my grand daughter had not pushed her hands on my stomach for a hug....I would surely have been dead in the morning..It was that that started the blur of 5 months to come added to that 5 more recouping at home.

OMG that's terrifying. I wonder why they use staples vs sutures.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
