melissapaige84 38 Posted October 25, 2013 Does anyone solely do their exercises at home? I get up now at 5am and walk down to my apartment gym to walk/run on the treadmill but I'm about to move and won't have that luxury. I don't want to join a gym because I want to work out early in the morning only and I know myself enough to know I won't drive that early. I have access to a treadmill when we move that I can have in my spare room so I was thinking about getting a couple of weights (dumbbells or kettlebells) and just making it a workout room. Does anyone else do this? Has it worked for you so far? or do you prefer using a dvd workout? hmm... 1 Scorpion11 reacted to this
BlessedBeyondMeasure2012 296 Posted October 25, 2013 This is exactly what I do. I have an elliptical that I use at home and I usually alternate that with walking/jogging in my neighborhood. I also have a set of 5 lb and 10 lb dumb bells that I use at home. I do lots of body resistance exercises like squats, incline push ups, plank, lunges, etc. I found that nerdfitness.com has a lot of good body resistance exercises and I have found them super helpful. I'd love to be able to go to a gym but I've got two kiddos at home and it just isn't possible. My hubby and kids come with me for walks and I love it when they do and my 5 year old likes to "lift weights" with me when I'm doing resistance stuff at home. We have a good time 2 gamergirl and melissapaige84 reacted to this
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted October 25, 2013 This is what I do. I have a couple of strength/toning dvd's and some that I can stream from Amazon to my tv. I have 1, 2, 3, 5, & 6 lb hand weights that I use with the exercise programs. I will be getting some 8 & 10 lb ones soon I hope! 2 BlessedBeyondMeasure2012 and melissapaige84 reacted to this
HoosierGirl 780 Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) YES! Love my early AM basement workouts. Totally quiet in the house, only one shower per day, and it's done and out of the way for the day. No where to drive. No excuses. I have been doing Jillian Michaels Body Revolution DVD's since May. It's a 12 week program that requires a yoga mat, hand weights and a resistance band. Workouts are 30-35 minutes long and have modifiers for beginners to advanced exercisers. She is pretty encouraging and I like how much instruction you get on proper form. Find what works for you at home and get it done! Good for you for finding what works for you. RickM 1,752 Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) http://www.trxtraining.com/ I don't workout exclusively at home (I keep the pool at the Y!) but I use the TRX and resistance bands when I travel. The TRX uses your weight for the strength work, and the level of strength required is varied by the angles and positions that you use. ItsMe2033 143 Posted October 26, 2013 I encourage you to work out at home, but to also join a gym and work out there as well some of the time. I've been working out at a gym for over 20 years. A few years prior to joining a gym, I was trying to work out at home. I did it for a while, but I found it difficult to stick to. Once I joined the gym and got into the habit of going regularly, I found it much easier to stick to working out.
BethinPA 305 Posted October 26, 2013 I have never liked gyms. I have a stationary bike, free weights, an exercise ball and lots of DVDs. I enjoy walking outside as much as possible. There are lots of routines to use on shape.com, and exercise equipment available at TJMax. 1 Scorpion11 reacted to this
wcn1970 239 Posted October 26, 2013 I do both. If I don't have time to drive I work out in the garage. I have it set as a small crossfit Gym with 10 different exercises I can do and modify to make more and a big clock to watch interval times. I also use insanity videos to change things up. They work and are meant for home. 1 Fiddleman reacted to this
linnie 1 Posted October 27, 2013 I've never had a gym membership. I work out 2 to 3 times a week at home. I have my own equipment here in my house. A bench, dumbbells, push-up handles and pull up bar. And I do a lot of strength exercises (for beginners) and body weight workouts. Wish I had a TRX Suspension Trainer, but it's almost christmas time in two months.
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted October 27, 2013 I do not know if a typical gym (24 hour, LA fitness and Golds to name a few) is for everyone. Every time I go to a regular gym, even if a small athletic club, I get overwhelmed by all the machines and the openness of the environment. By openness, I mean unless you are well disciplined and have a solid plan every time you go in, there are just too many different options among among a rack of dumbbells or a set of resistance machines. It is easy to "just go through the motions" and effectively waste an hour. And despite the existence of a few working out around you, it feels like a very solitary experience. People are in their own world. No one talks to each other. I cannot be alone in these thoughts. For these reasons, I find a good DVD program at home or a well structured workout program (cross fit) works best for me. Left to my own devices to execute on a workout plan every day in an unstructured environment and I would most likely give up due to lack of interest. At home there are several good programs on DVD from pdx90 to insanity to "you are your own gym" to Jillian michael's "ripped" to bob harper's "Inside out." I like cross fit because there is a strong sense of community and we are all friends. The workouts are also prescribed every day and are different, making it interesting and a continual challenge. 1 melissapaige84 reacted to this
