high protein snacks?

Recommended Posts

If you want the nutrition of nuts they need to be raw, once they are roasted they are just tasty carbs, all the nutrition is gone.

I respectfully disagree with that statement. Oil roasting may add additional calories, but many studies have shown that the roasting of nuts actually increases the bioavailability of their nutrients.

I can't find any scientific sources that imply roasted nuts and seeds are devoid of nutritional value. As a vegetarian, my nutritionist recommends them as an additional Protein and fat source. Can you send me your scientific sources pretty please? Obviously, if I'm better off eating doritos I would prefer to know before snack time!

An interesting article on this topic http://www.livestrong.com/article/324603-nuts-roasted-vs-raw/

Another one with a different spin http://www.livestrong.com/article/446108-is-nutrition-lost-when-nuts-are-roasted/

You could probably find an article for any side of the question! :P

Thanks Globetrotter. I read all of the "articles" but don't feel that any of them verifies a lack of nutrition on the part of the abused roasted nut. I see that it adds fat and salt to the already fatty nut. The last article indicates a slightly altered dose of nutrition but hardly suggests they are worthless carbs. Unfortunately, it looks like doritos are off the table. Another scientific let down. Long live nacho kale chips!

Kale chips ARE where it's at, I'm still trying to figure out how to make my own without them turning black and wafer thin :( Cool ranch is my fave. Have you tried dried dulse/sea vegetables? satisfyingly salty and crunchy.

I can't get my oven low enough to not burn them either. Also dino kale is terrible for kale chips, like tissue paper. Curly leaf turns out better. Dehydrating gives me the best and most delicious result.

Thanks just ordered the Ostrim I had never heard of them before although I had ostrich meat in Aruba and enjoyed it. I love this site.

My man is a chef so I got some kale. Ima take notes as he makes kale chips and I will spread the knowledge! I have not tried the cool ranch but will pick some up tomorrow. I am intimidated by sea veggies. Guess I need to try them!

I calculated the nutritional facts on that recipe based on making 3 dozen balls...not sure how big those would be though! lol

Nah, haven't tried humus stuffed deviled eggs. Do you just use hummus instead of mayo?

KALE chips

Preheat the oven to 350.

Tear your kale leaves into small pieces so they will dry evenly in the oven. If you've just washed the leaves make sure you spin them dry in a salad spinner.

Lay them out on a baking sheet and spray with Pam. Sprinkle with salt (or experiment with other seasonings if you like: onion powder, Old Bay) and bake for 10-15 minutes. Check regularly for doneness. They will go from dry and crunchy to brown and bitter quickly.

A dehydrator works best! Takes longer but so worth it!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
