Too Early...to experiment

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

You don't know me yet, but I've been following all of you very closely since April 2013. That is when I seriously started planning for surgery. Basics: Surgery 9/24/13, 30 some pounds lost since beginning of journey, No regrets...unless...I screwed something up being stupid. I was progressing perfectly with no issues that I hadn't already prepared for. So I'm starting 5th week this week, feeling bullet proof and decided to try something...POPCORN... Huge mistake. I was able to eat maybe 1 cup, which was like heaven. I used to be able to eat the gigantic movie theatre popcorn bags they prepare for the rush...you know the clear garbage bags. Well its 3 days later and still it hurts to swallow even liquids. No vomiting. Everything will go down, but it hurts, like there is a scratch or knot there. Doc said probably just swelling, inflammation and irritation from the crunchy food, not obstructed or food stuck or there would be vomiting and constent progressive pain. He suggested liquids or soft foods for a few days until swelling and pain subsides. Well I'm feeling like a major loser for messing up my progress, because now I'm back at the beginning drinking Protein shakes until it heals and I can progress again. If you have any other suggestions that could help me through this fiasco quicker I would appreciate it. I did finally jump on the eliptical machine today. Whew whipped after just 10 minutes, but felt good. I will try to add to it over next few days. Thanks. Like I said I've been following the blogs here and it seems like a supportive place.

I'm sorry, I'm too new to have advice. But I do thank you for the alert about popcorn! Don't beat yourself up though. One cup of popcorn isn't going to do long term damage. BTW I am 10 days post op and still on fluids.

Warm liquids !! Avoid cold, we usually think that cold will help with swelling but it makes it worse, hot teas and warm broth will help sooth.

Hang in there. The warm liquid suggestion is a good one. It will pass, but I understand the irritation.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
