How did you pick your "starting weight"?

Recommended Posts

This decision has actually been really hard for me and I go back and forth. Right now I am using the weight I was at my initial consultation (295). But on another site I use my surgery weight (266). I have a couple thoughts on it. For psychological and motivational reasons I think it's important for me to remember how hard I worked before I had the surgery. It could help me feel less discouraged about what I perceive to be slow weight loss from the surgery itself. On the other hand, I also wonder what other people see when they look at the ticker. Are they assuming it's the surgery weight?

I was 309 a week before surgery, lost 12lbs leading up to the day and was 288 on surgery day. I have lost 98-99lbs depending on the day.

I use highest weight Sept 2012 and surgery weight 4-30-13

HW 304 SW 271 Current weight 171. I had to loose 10% of my highest to qualify for surgery as required by my insurance.

I use my highest weight because it was probably a month before surgery so it's not like it was a weight from 10 years ago.

However, sadly my highest weight was actually higher than either of my pregnancies!

I use the weight I was at my first visit to my surgeon. It's what I'd been for a few years aside from the 10 pounds I had gained then lost again after I quit smoking. I definitely count the 44 pounds I lost from that first visit to the day before surgery. After all, I'd been on the high Protein, low carb diet since that day. I've only lost 20 pounds since then in the 2+ months since surgery.

I used my weight from the morning of surgery. It seemed like the weight that best represented the end of my pre-sleeve life. That it was also my highest weight factored in as well.

I am one of those who actually gained a few pounds during my six month supervised diet! Someone in another thread mentioned "food funerals" when you imagine you won't be able to eat something ever again after surgery. I wish we all realized this is not usually the case (after we have healed up from surgery) so there is no need to overwear or overindulge.

I use my weight from the first day of pre-op but I learned something on this thread! Not to pay attention to someone else's rate of loss unless they state when they started counting!

I used the weight of when I started my journey to lose seriously. For me that was 333lbs when I started eating smart back in May. Now I weigh 283lbs, and surgery is thursday. I only lost 6.5lbs on my pre-op.

So my surgery weight will be around 281-282 lbs.

I did mine based on my bariatric evaluation visit. I started my classes shortly there after. It was about 3 months into the process.

248 was the weight the day before my surgery. I think it happened to be my highest weight also. Even tho I lost most of the weight with my lapband (revision 3 mths ago) I count my weight as tho I lost it all with the sleeve (after all, it was all cuz of wls in general). While I've only lost 22 lbs since being sleeved (I knew it would come off slower cuz I started at 174) I've lost almost 100 lbs total since wls.

I picked the weight from when I first saw the surgeon, which happens to be my highest weight. Weight lost is weight lost IMO

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
