How did you pick your "starting weight"?

Recommended Posts

Question - how did you select the weight to use when tracking your VSG weight loss?

It occurred to me last night that my belly looks so deflated because I have lost 120lbs from my highest pregnancy weight. And although I haven't "lost" 120 lbs with my sleeve, the past pounds would still impact my body. So, I thought I would ask my sleeve sisters and brothers what weight you used as your "starting weight"?

1. Did you "start" with your weight at the beginning of your sleeve investigation?

2. Maybe you used your surgery day weight? Perhaps the beginning pre-op diet weight?

3. Did you use your highest EVER weight? Maybe your highest PREGNANCY weight (ladies)?

For me - all these numbers are different! Depending on the starting number, it really affects my total loss. Personally, I used the beginning PRE-OP diet weight to set my "starting weight". What about you?

Interesting topic. I decided last June I was going to take steps toward surgery. My start weight was from that day. I think it was probably my highest weight , at least if felt that way.

So as to not confuse what I lost post op, I have it in my signature what my Day of Surgery weight was. But for me, my journey started the day I made the decision to move forward, and all my efforts had the same goal in mind, so I count it!

Mine was easy because I discovered on the first day of my bariatric orientation that I was at my highest weight ever so that is what I use.

Highwater mark is convenient. Like Denise, my highwater mark was the day I went to the information session.

I used the weight that I was at my initial consultation. That is 11 lbs lower than my highest weight a few years ago when I did Medifast.

I used my weight from the day I had my consultation. It was pretty close (within 5 pounds) of my max weight. Never have been pregnant, so that wasn't a concern for me.

I'm using the date that I decided to have the surgery - it was the day I had my consultation with the doctor. It was also my highest documented weight.

I used what was on the scale at my very first bariatric weigh-in...

My stats below tell the story. I could have been heavier, I stayed off the scale then to avoid further depression. I have resisted the temptation to up my starting weight to make my loss more dramatic.

The main point is that it came off and I am elated to be rid of it.

I use the weight I weighed in at a few hours after surgery. When they came to make me walk the halls, I jumped on one of their scales.< /p>

I'm going to use the beginning of my pre-op diet.

Wow - this is really great. And yes, the weight at my initial information session was close to my weight at the start of my pre-op diet.

Makes sense that when you are at your all time high weight you would get serious about having surgery & go to an information session. Kudos to you all for taking charge of your weight.

I had no pre op diet. The weight I use is the weight I was on the day I had my pre op assessment (10 days before my actual surgery date).

I use my weight from my first bariatric clinic weigh in, which just happens to be my highest known weight. I say known, because I avoided the scale for a long time prior to that so who knows if I weighed more at one time. I always lost weight during my 3 pregnancies, but as soon as I was the only one digesting the calories, forget about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
