I'm Scared of My Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've finally got a solid date and surgeon. I started this thing back in January, when a friend of mine was planning on having the surgery. I spoke to my mom about it, and she was on board. We originally set a date for May 18th, a few days after I graduated high school, well, that didn't work well with mom's work schedual, so after much fussing on my part I agreed to a date of June 12.

Well then my dad decided he didn't want me going to Mexico to do this. So I had to change the date again, this time to July 28th, after I turned 18 and he couldn't do anything to stop me. The date has now changed 3 times, and the surgeon at this point had been changed 5 times.

Then, my dad put me on his insurance (without telling me, or mom), and there was a chance my insurance would cover it and I wouldn't have to go out of the country. Sweet, right? Wrong. That was up in the air for about 2 months, before dad pulled me off of his insurance.

So, I gave up. But then I decided "No, this is happening, it's going to happen, if I have to make it happen." And mom and I re-planned a trip to Mexico, with another different surgeon, Dr. Illan.

Hopefully, this one will stick. Plane tickets have been bought, dates have been set (NOVEMBER 13th!), and protien shakes have been purchased!

I start my pre-op next Wednesday; small problem though, my pre-op diet seems to have been designed by satan. For two weeks, all I can have is liquids, yoghurt, and one protien shake a day.

I think I am going to pass out! I can't sit at home and be miserable during this, I have to go to school 12 hours a day on Mondays and Wednesdays. I also have 12 hour work days in my mom's daycare. What can I do?!

Well first of all, you are not alone. I think most of us were pretty scared, uncertain about surviving the pre op diet. If you start cutting out sugar and carbs now... It will be much easier for your body to adjust and detox. It's really not that bad tho. Something happens to our body where it just adjusts to the smaller food intake. I work a pretty demanding job, long hours etc and I'm doing fine for all six days so far. You will too!

Congrats on your commitment to going forward with the surgery. Dr illan has alot of happy sleeve patients! I'm going to Mexico in one week.

So your diet that was designed by satan only allows Clear Liquids? Plus a shake and yogurt? Or full liquids?

It doesn't exactly say which one, but I'm assuming it's full liquids.

Here's exactly what it says;

Ok so most doctors recommend 60-90 grams of Protein. Your shake had better have at least 30 gr. and you'll be eating alot of yogurt (dannon lite n fit Greek yogurt /x the protein) or you could do one Isopure clear Liquid Protein -40 grams of pro per bottle. It's filling satisfying and you'd have your recommended protein to keep u healthy strong and within your doctors guidelines. U wouldn't even have to do much yogurt if any, if u drink an ISOPURE. Tastes kinda like Gatorade. Available at GNC or online at ISOPURE or GNC. I personally would limit the fruit juice, the calories add up fast unless u do V8. Splash lite which is 1/2 the cals of reg juice. When do u start your pre op diet? I'm halfway thru mine.

Im on day 2 of my liquid diet and it isnt that bad. I have to work all day but you can push through it. The Jello really helps and keeping you Protein helps too. I agree with italiancurves and stay away from the fruit juices. My NUT said only 4 oz if I got really weak but I havent. You can do it and I will too! Just keep swimming eye on the prize. best of luck

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll try to remember it. I've never really liked fruit juices, so that's not a real big deal for me.

It's probably not as bad as I think it's going to be, but I can't help angsting about no solid food for almost 3 months

It'll be worth it though, I know. And yes, we both have passports! :)

Good luck kyrie! You got this. It's going to be so worth it!

I'm on day 11 liquid diet. First day of clear today. Friday is sleeve day!

Limit the temptations and put yourself first. This is your priority. I wish I would have done this when I was younger. You have your whole life ahead of you :-)

Half way there! (Whoa-oa, livin' on a prayer  )

Surgery is in a week! I'm so excited I've almost forgot about my homicidal rage towards people who eat in front of me haha. I should start packing! I'm terrified I'm going to forget somthing! I need a checklist.

Still stressing about the flight... mom said she'd give me dramamine, buuut I don't know what that's gonna do, besideds make me sleepy. You can be sleepy and terrified at the same time. Trust me. I know. I'm terrified of most things.

Anywho, I can't wait!!!

That's more restrictive than my diet. I'm on day 1. same as your diet except we can have sugar free fudgecicles, popcicles and must have 70g of Protein a day. We can have dannon light and fit yogurt and fruit juice and low fat cream Soup. I'm diabetic so wont be drinking fruit juice( unless I have a low blood sugar). Today has been really, really hard.

I'M SO HUNGRY I'M GOING TO DIEEE. Seriously, I'm starving. And my family ordered pizza, and there's delicious, delicious leftovers sitting in the fridge. I'm on the verge of tears. HELP?!

Almost there! I can't wait. My mom says my face is looking thinner, but I don't see it. I swear my family are being assholes on purpose; we NEVER eat like this, but all week they've been making some of my favorite foods and eating it right in front of me.

Also, if my little brother says a liquid diet is "not that bad" (he was on one for all of a day once) I'm going to shatter his nose.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
