Need words of encouragement about post op pain

Recommended Posts

I am two and a half weeks out. Doing absolutely great with weight loss. I've lost 20 pounds so far. Tracking my food and my Protein and my Water intake, everything is good. What I'm having is severe muscle spasms/pain on the left side of my abdomen from where they dilate those muscles and remove the stomach. Sometimes the pain is debilitating. I'm still taking my lortab and I take diazepam for muscle spasms. I also use a heating pad at night. I mostly just need to hear from others who have this pain that it will eventually go away and it's not something I should be too scared of. I had back surgery last year that turned into an infection in my spine. This led to a week in the hospital and 8 weeks of disability over an outpatient surgery so I am over worried about this pain lasting so long. Any information that anyone can provide is very much appreciated. I mostly just need to hear that I am not alone and that this will pass. If anyone can provide their personal experience of how long it took to get past this point I think it will help me. Thank you in advance.

This happened to me... yes it's normal. To REALLY fully go away.... a couple of months. It gets better with time and eventually becomes this nagging ache that eventually disappears completely and it's like... you don't know when it stopped being there, LOL.

For me, it was worse at night, sleeping on that side was out of the question. And I was a roller, so I'd constantly wake up and roll back to the side that didn't hurt.

Hope this helps!

I had the same thing and was so sick of it I just cried. It lasted about 2 weeks for me, which felt like forever. Pic was sick of being on pain meds that knocked me out. I saw my surgeon on a Thursday 2 weeks after surgery and was till having the radiating pain. He said it was completely normal. The next day it went away. I felt like the heavens had opened up. It was still a few days before I could sleep on my side.

Hang in there....the pain will subside. It's all normal. I'm here for support! I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op. Best wishes...take care!!!

TanyaB I didn't have much pain after surgery, but I did have horrible weakness. So weak I couldn't walk, and felt I had made a terrible mistake. I can only imagine how I would have felt with pain as you describe. I can safely say.. hang in there.. this will pass and you'll be on your way to a new lifestyle real soon. Stay strong..

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
