Catastrophic Slippage

Recommended Posts

After discussing this many times with my doc, we feel I was just too tight, but that it happened not because of my fills, but because of what was going on inside my body. The bottom line is too tight is too tight, no matter what the reason. I made the mistake of thinking if I took care of the bloating and swelling issues, the band tightness would correct itself - and it might have. But I never got the opportunity to find out. And this to Lynn, you should never ever have a problem with liquids going down. You should always be able to drink as much Water as you need without having to "wait" for it to go down. You sound like you're too tight, and being too tight is what led to my slippage and surgery. Leenerbups, the doc thinks the tightness led to a complete obstruction which led to the catastrophic slip. I had no symptoms of a slip at all before this incident. Lynn, thanks for the Dramamine suggestion. I'll certainly give it a try. Be sure and call your doc and let him know how tight you are.

Thanks for the advice Janet, I am on my way in right now to get a slight un-fill. I hope it helps because this has honestly been miserable and I just need to be patient with the weight loss. I'll let you all know how today goes.

Thanks for the support ~

Lynn

Thank you for thinking of us and sharing your story. I do think it's important for us to hear this stories, in the research process, and after.

I hope you'll stick around and keep us posted on how you are doing. You're still a 'bandster', even without your band. :)

Thank You!!!! Thank You!! This is not to much information. I have a slipped band and i have been waiting over a month for surgery. My surgeon's staff does not seen to understand that my repair is not elective surgery. I tell them I AM SICK. I need help. My surgeon would not let them schedule my surgery until I paid 5500.00 upfront even though I have full coverage from Blue Cross. I am not giving my surgeon's name because I am going to let him have the opportunity to make it right. I believe he is a good surgeon. My repair surgery is costing me 9000.00 with insurance coverage. I have had aspiration pnemonia twice. I am a very sick puppy waiting for surgery.....one more month to go...Jennifer

Baby that band until you get your surgery! If you have any pain at all, call the doc at once. You can lose parts of your body in only a few hours if the band slips the wrong way. Money doesn't mean a hell of a lot when you get into a desperate situation. I wish I could "buy" back my old insides!

Hi,

I just read this article today. You said you had a 10cm band and it talks about that. Thought I would let you read it for yourself. Not sure it has anything to do with the problem you had but wanted to share it with you.

I am so sorry you had to go through this. Praying for your complete recovery. Hugs, Deb

</DT><DD class=abstract id=abstract17303945>Slippage after Adjustable Gastric Banding according to the Pars Flaccida and the Perigastric Approach.

Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University, Safat, Kuwait.

Objective: To evaluate laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and the 'pars flaccida' techniques for treating morbidly obese patients. Subjects and Methods: Between May 1999 and July 2002, 64 patients underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. The 'perigastric' technique was performed in the first 31 patients. From September 2000 the band was positioned according to the 'pars flaccida' technique in the remaining 33 patients. The patients were divided into three groups: group 1 - 'perigastric' technique using Lap-Band size 9.75 and 10 cm (31 patients); group 2 - 'pars flaccida' technique using Lap-Band size 10 cm (12 patients), and group 3 - 'pars flaccida' technique using the Swedish band (21 patients). There were 58 females and 6 males with a mean age of 36.6 years (range 17-56). The preoperative mean body mass index was 46.2 kg/m(2). Results: Band slippage occurred in 10/31 patients (32.2%) of group 1, 3/12 patients (25%) of group 2 and none in group 3 patients (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The 'pars flaccida' technique significantly reduces the incidence of postoperative slippage after gastric banding. This complication is further reduced in the Swedish band group. Furthermore, we do not recommend using the 10-cm Lap-Band in the 'pars flaccida' technique. Copyright © 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel.

I went in yesterday and had a slight adjustment to reduce the amount of 'fill' in my band. I had gotten a 2.1 fill on Thursday of last week, and yesterday they removed .3, so now I have 1.8. We'll see I guess . . . I am most hopeful that this adjustment will help and am now just waiting to see. I will keep you all posted.

Lynn

Omamoon - speaking as someone who is an ER nurse - my apologies for the rudeness of the first one. Appearances must have been really deceiving - I have to admit I get annoyed at people that "act out" out of proportion to what we think they should be feeling (like the folks that are laughing and chatting with their friends, then, when the nurse or doc shows up, they start moaning and yelling). So sorry you had to go through the whole thing - you must have been in excruciating pain with your stomach being strangled - and so happy you survived!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
