How did you know this would be diff from normal dieting?

I knew this was different when I stopped obsessing about food and wasn't constantly hungry. I can eat in moderation now where before I don't think I ever truly knew the meaning of moderation! I listen to my body now - I eat when I'm hungry now not just because it's lunchtime or dinner time or because I'm feeling something I don't want to feel. I still struggle some with the last one, though!

I found that pre-sleeve I would sabotage myself because my body wanted carbs or sugar, or whatever. Now, my body wants its Protein NOW and when I get my couple of ounces down, there is no room for anything else. In 3 hours or so, it wants Protein again, nuts, soy nuts, yogurt, glass of milk, Jerky, refried Beans, etc. I still listen to my body but it's sure a different story these days. It wants its Water on time, too.

I was a huge sugar eater/lots of candy prior, but now I can take it or leave it. If I do indulge (for old times' sake) I don't really enjoy it the way I used to (although Starbucks Skinny Mochas 12oz are pretty good!) I prefer savory things now. chips and salsa are a problem, though. I can get down 6 chips with salsa, but then I can't eat my protein, so my son has to keep me away from the chips and warn me that I won't have room for the entree.

I ran across this thread this morning when I did a search for "afraid I'll fail". I know my surgery is coming up pretty quickly now. Things have started to move pretty fast. The psych told me my bad habit of grazing will "ruin" any chances of success. So, I am taking some time to make those changes now. I work an odd shift, I wake at 2am I arrive at work at 4:30am, and don't eat until 5am or 6am. He completely understood why I wasn't losing weight. Waiting 4 hours after waking to eat, then having CRAP to eat (carbs) and no Protein till noon, then grazing when I get home at 3pm is the reason I gained all this weight. Now I have to change it up. I began today to make that change. I do not want to fail. I really need to succeed. I want to enjoy my life in a healthy way. Please feel free to comment on this. I need the help and support.

I knew I would succeed at this once I got my head on straight as to why I was eating the way I was. I had to do a pre op 6 month diet actually thrilled when I found out about that requirement.

I was not someone who had researched and thought about this surgery for years and years before I did anything so I needed that time to wrap my head around and understand all the changes that would be taking place after the surgery.

Once I did I felt armed and ready. Grant it I was still scared, but I was ready and determined. I decided I could do this and I was going to do this. I was not going to have 85% of my stomach removed and then not do the work that was/is required to succeed. I am going to work this tool for all it is worth during these early stages to get my money (or my insurances) out of it.

I will be 14 weeks post op tomorrow, as of today I am down 68lbs and knock on wood I have lost every week so far. I feel great. And that is good motivator.

Good Luck with your journey, and to anyone reading this. Remember to follow your docs orders and do the best that you can, you don't have to be perfect, you just have to do it!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
