New and considering lap band

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone! I am new to the forum and considering lap band. I am currently 37 years old, 5'3 and weigh 225 pounds. I've been struggling with my weight since I took my first bc pill at 17. Over the years I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, had a hysterectomy at 31 and gained even more!:faint: Just recently my doctor diagnosed me with a fatty liver, and my cholesterol is a bit high. I want to tackle this now before I begin having health issues, but I am honestly afraid at the same time. I don't know if our insurance will cover the procedure. So I am looking for anyone who has had the surgery in north Louisiana that could give me advice and encouragement, and recommendations on a great physician in our area.

Thanks so much.

By my calculations I need to lose about 85 lbs. and have a BMI of 38

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I am not from Louisiana, but I wanted to welcome you to the board. I have PCOS as well, and have found that my weight loss has actually alleviated some of my symptoms, which is wonderful.

My insurance didn't cover my surgery either, so we refinanced our home. For me, it was 100% worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I think you will find this is the best decision you could ever make for yourself and your health!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
