How long did it take for you to feel normal again?

Recommended Posts

How long after surgery did you personally start to feel normal (or a new normal) again? Can you remember when you were relatively pain-free? How long did you have lifting restrictions?

My husband and I are foster parents (as well as foster to adopt) and we take in babies and toddlers for the most part. I'm wondering how long I should take off from fostering after surgery?

It's been two weeks, and I was pretty much pain free from the third day. Better ask your Dr. about fostering. I know lifting is a no-no for a while.

I'm not allowed to lift for 6 weeks. As far as feeling normal, it varies greatly. Just depends on luck of the draw. Im almost 6 weeks out, and Im just starting to feel better, but I still get woozy occasionally and definitely still get light headed when I bend down.

I'm 6 days post opened, and I really hurt myself listing my toddler onto the potty. You really won't be able to lift or carry the babies for a little while. I sure do hope it doesn't take too long.

I was pain free on day 4 post-op and I had a no more than 10lbs. lifting restriction until I was 6 weeks post op. Everyone is different, but I was able to resume my normal life by day 8 post-op.

A month. A full month.

Definitely a full month!! I remember that I kept saying that I couldn't wait to feel like myself again. After my one month checkup, I finally started to feel better everyday.

6 weeks and I had adopted my life post op as normal. I think about how life use to be and THAT is strange lol

A month seems to be the general consensus. It also depends on what you mean when you say normal... the pain subsided for me around week 2. Eating wise, I am starting to feel the most normal now... around week 5ish.

At least a month. As you move into more real food your energy level will be more regular. 6 weeks for lifting anything over 10 lbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
