Smooth Recovery? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Thanks again for the posts, Everyone. I go into the hospital at 5:30 Monday morning. I actually have to work a 12 hour shift tonight so I should be sleeping, but my nerves are really starting to ramp up. I wish I could be on an IV drip of Ativan until they put me to sleep for surgery ( but I think that a nurse walking around attached to an IV pole and high on benzos might be a little off-putting to some patients.) I am supposed to do liquids today and tomorrow. I'm not even dreading it because the anxiety has taken my appetite and I actually feel nauseous and shaky (or maybe it was that 5 hour Energy that I had at 3 am at work). Anyway, I just can't wait to get this done and be on the other side of this so that I can help some neurotic pre-ops like me. I just need to get a few hours of sleep, get through my shift tonight and I will be almost there. Thanks again, all, for your encouraging words.

In surgery holding area I was given versed to help me relax. Uh huh it knocked me out! I don't take very many meds so I have a very low tolerance. After surgery first day was rough. After that everything was slow and easy. 29 days post op now and I can do everything but lift over 15 lbs. Good luck to u!

I have had no problems at all except I take blood thinners and I cannot keep my blood thick enough. So they took me off blood thinners and put on an injectable called Arixtra. It works like lovenox but now I only have to take one shot a day. Plus no bruising which is really nice.

Good Luck Lyn, you will be fine. I am a hospital pharmacist and I think working in the healthcare field makes it a little scarier for us. Lol. Remember complication rates are low with this surgery and you are in good hands. You'll do great.

Thanks, Everyone. Today's my day. I'm actually being prepped right now. They're rushing me through because I overslept and was an hour and a half late. Stupid Iphone alarm didn't go off. Anyway, I will keep you all posted. Think of me today.

Your surgery will go fine. Use the heating pad on your shoulders for the trapped gas. MOVE around as much as you can. My surgery was out patient. I was up and dressed the Wednesday. Out the house on Friday for a picnic with my 6 yr old grand daughter.

Off work 6 full days then worked 1/2 days for 6 and doing great!

Good luck today

Hi all,

Everything went well. He found a hernia, so that was repaired. I had some pain initially, but it's been under control. I have a scopolamine patch and zofran to control my nausea. And I feel pretty good overall. My biggest complaint is that I am just exhausted. In and out of sleep all day. Also, I noticed an indentation in my abdomen where I'm sure my hernia was repaired. My nurses said they have never seen that before so I have to wait for the surgeon to see me to find out what that is. Anyway, so far, so good. Thanks for all of your support.

Like some others I have had a very smooth recovery. I've lost 51 lbs since October 10th and I was pretty much pain free and left the hospital the same day. I did have a tiny bit of nausea the first morning but I was fine after that. I haven't found a food that is unsettling either. The only thing that I still have issue with is getting my Protein in. But I think most of us are in that boat.

Feeling great, losing much more slowly but feeling great. I have been home with my kids for the past 9 years & I just got an art teaching job! So excited to get back to work & finally now feeling that I'll be able to handle it physically... Yay! Much to be thankful for this year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
