Smooth Recovery? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am 8 weeks post op and had a pretty complication-free recovery and was back to work after 2 weeks. I remember coming on here right before my surgery and kind of freaking myself out too, but I wouldn't change a thing!

Other than really bad gas and some nausea , my recovery has been smooth! But like most, I was up walking right away! A little story, I did great and the guy next to me howled and screamed and cried all night! The nurses were in there constant, I thought he was dying ! Come to find out he was sleeved just like me! Lol! I'm like, " come on dude, what the hell is your problem!" I agree with some of the posts, some people's mental state and pain threshold are different, and every little thing we ignore may turn into a huge spiraling issue to them!

Ii hope you're right. I'm an OB nurse and I take care of women immediately after c-sections and they are all so different in how they respond to pain. Some are ready to get up and moving within a few hours after surgery and I have had others literally crying and moaning after. I have had 2 c-sections myself and I never thought the recovery was that painful. I always describe it as a feeling of being unzipped and re-zipped. A little tight, but never that painful. I have been told that the pain from the vsg is not nearly as bad as an open surgery like a c- section so I'm actually not that worried about pain. It's the potential complications that scare me.

Sleeved in late May and no major problems so far. Did have nausea after drinking the stuff for the leak test in the hospital but no nausea since. Have lost 80lbs in the past five months. Walking a lot in the beginning was key for me as took me a while to stop sleeping most of the day, but was nice outside at that time of year. Also, had a lot of Constipation issues but walking and Fiber helped that after a while. Had two weeks off work after the op but felt fine in the office after that. Had some pain round the large incision site but that went away after a couple of weeks too. Key on the possible complications is to talk through the possibilities with the surgeon. Mine went through the different complications but then said we know what can go wrong and what to do if it happens so I was less worried after that.

Great recovery. 10/21. Only issue for me was my sprained sacroiliac joint in my back. Ugh ugh ugh. 2 weeks of hell. No pain from surgery.

Was sleeved almost six weeks ago on October 7th, 2013. Had a very smooth recovery and am down just over 50 pounds and feeling AMAZING!! Think positive and know that it is understandable to get very anxious and second guess, but don't! It's an amazing experience, and life changing and the results and feeling soon after are amazing! Please keep us updated

I haven't read the entire thread, sorry. But I'm nearly three years out -- and have NEVER had any problems...of any kind! I count myself super lucky. But I'm not the only one! :-)

That is great to here. I hope that I will be able to say the same.

My second day after was hell because I had a lot of swelling where my band was and had a lot of nausea. I was just fine until I went down for the barium swallow and discovered it wouldnt go down into my stomach. It took the nurses half the day to find something to control my nausea. Finally after several failed atempts they gave me reglan and loratab and I took a 2 hour nap. When I woke up I was great and have been ever since. This recovery was much faster than my lap band was. after 7 days I was out doing yard work and up on the room cleaning gutters. Today is day 13 and I am jogging and biking again. I only took pain meds for 3 days, easy easy recovery.

I am so thankful I found this thread. I have been seeing too much negativity and the anxiety had spiked so high I have noticed myself trying to back out. All of your positive words are helping get me back on track with positive thoughts and confidence.

Brennalynn, that is exactly why I started this thread. I was having so much anxiety after my surgery date was set and I just needed to know that the vast majority came through this okay. I am a mom of 2 little boys and a wife. I am the primary breadwinner for my family as my husband is a full time student. I just needed some reassurance that I am making a good choice for myself and my family. All of these stories are so encouraging to me and I'm glad that they are helping you too.

One horror story that freaked me out is people saying they can only drink 2oz of Water every 15 min. I was afraid I would not be able to drink Water and that freaked me out.

I timed myself drinking 16oz of water at a leisurely rate. I was not rushing or trying to see how fast I could drink it.

14min (watching TV, carrying on a conversation...)

That is hardly the 2 oz every 15 min.

I'm not measuring, but my dr's recommendation is 1 oz of water every 15 minutes. I think that is to make sure that everyone gets in enough liquid throughout the day though.

I just had my surgery 3 days ago. No problems so far.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
