Survival skills for the 14 day pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I am on Day 2 of my pre-op also my surgery date is October 30th. I find it very hard to get in all the shakes. I am not having any issues but I find I don't have all the time to keep drinking 4 shakes a day, I have been also keeping myself very busy and find I am not hungry. Question I have noticed that my urine output is very reduced, Do you think it is because of all the Protein. I remember when all the hype about the Atkins diet and people having kidney problems with all the protein. Any thoughts?

My pre-op (surgery on November 20) is really not much of a pre-op. I've been low carbing it for years, and this is very similar.

Lol... Mindijean...put that menu of yours away!

That's making me hungry. Most of us don't really get food per say.

May I ask... What is your BMI ?

I'm sorry! Do you want me to delete it?

It just amazes me how different everyone's pre and post op diets are.

According to what I typed in here, it's 48?

Lol, no u don't need to remove it. I'm just super hungry right now (day three, only Protein Shakes, lettuce and chicken) so I'm thinking those 15 nuts look delicious. Lol.

So strange... Everyone's diets are soooo different.

My BMI is 35 and I'm realizing, our pre op diets must be based on many factors.

I think it was gamer girl who said that her and her hunny both used the same doc and had the same BMi but were on different pre op diets.

My three days before surgery are CLEAR liquid only. That outta be fun :-/

I'm so sorry you have such an icky diet!

Mine is the standard protocol for my hospital. I'm going to Froedtert in Milwaukee to have the surgery. They don't want us using liquid as a way of life and so start us off on pureed foods in the hospital. This hospital is a Center for Excellence, so I figure they must be doing something right?

I have a big problem with most sugar free items and artificial sweeteners, so I cannot imagine having three days of clear liquid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
