It's Done!

Well, I'm banded.

After a couple of nervous weeks, it's over.

Dr. Tim LeMieur performed the procedure at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (www.cuyunamed.org) in Crosby, MN.

He said he ran into complications due to a pocket of fat that was in the way, which he disected, and used a larger band than what he had ever used before. He also said I had the thinnest layer of skin that he had ever encountered, and that is why my port sticks out a bit. thanks be to God that he navigated through it all.

Has anyone also encountered these issues?

It was performed Friday morning; I went home Saturday morning, and it's now Tuesday morning and I'm still a bit sore. Is this common? I'm getting a refill on the liquid codine.

Last night I had a 1/2 cup of apple/pear sauce for my first mush. The pills that I'm on have been successfully swallowed thus far, but my favourite is the All Source chewable Vitamin (thanks for the advice).

I'm doing two packs of carnation sugar-free instant Breakfast each day for Protein. The Vitamins seem to stack up, and it's much cheaper than other options.

I started at 285 lbs., and had surgery at 273.5 lbs. Today I weigh 267. It's rewarding, but considering all that I've givven up it seems like I should be svelt already...

Thanks for all the advice and support on this site! It really is helpful.

That's 18 lbs!! That's a wonderful loss to be sure!

It sounds as if you are right on track, really. After about the 5th day things start getting way better. Usually the 3rd-4th days are the worst for me.

I'm day 5 out of subsequent gallbladder surgery :). No fun, but I'm getting there.

Just keep sipping and walking. Use the heating pad if you have shoulder pain. Gax-X helps with gas/bloating. Another week, you'll be like new!

Don't get discouraged if after a few days some of that initial weight loss returns. Often, Water is the first thing we lose. This is a lifetime thing. No hurry. Just heal for now and keep us posted how you're doing!

Congrats!!

Keep us posted. These fine ladies say it's different for guys, so I can learn a lot from your experiences. Like what to expect, for instance.

Sounds like it's not too bad, so far. Did'ja get the jitters before the surgery? I know you said something to that effect in another post.

Have you had surgery before? The last time I was on an OR table I was like twelve. Barely remember it.

Good luck! Sounds like you're losing already.

Congratulations! It sounds like you are well on your way to a new you. In answer to your questions about the problems the doctor encountered, I've never heard of this happening before, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Are you following your doctor's instructions regarding diet? I think most doctors suggest being on liquids for two weeks after surgery before starting on mush, but you should follow your own doctor's orders.

The main thing is that the hard part is over. Keep your eye on the prize.

Nancy

Hi Maurice... and welcome to the "other" side!!!!

Im another one that cant comment on the issues you had. My stomach area was VERY soft - probably from my 3 c-sections!

You are gonna do fantastic! (men always do:) ) I remember doing ALOT of popsicles during that phase!

And keep in mind that its perfectly normal to get VERY hungry post op. I was asking my nurse when I could get something to eat as soon as I got back in my room from being banded!!

Leatha.... I didnt know you had gall-bladder surgery...duhhhh!!!Where the heck have I been????

HOW ARE YOU???????

Hi Maurice,

Glad to hear the surgery is all done with and your recovering. I thought everything you described sounded pretty normal. Good job on the 18 lbs too. Best wishes to you, Teresa

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
