Painful stomach bubbles when eating fatty or oily food

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm 2 years out and I'm still annoyed by a pesky problem. When I have even just one bite of certain foods that are fatty or oily (examples: steak, vegetables sauteed in oil, hamburger, fried food, walnuts, high-fat cheese) I get instant uncomfortable stomach bubbles. It doesn't happen with all fatty foods -- for example, I can eat chocolate with no problem. I still have my gallbladder, but I know it has stones (at least it did at a pre-surgery ultrasound in 2011).

Obviously it's not the end of the world, and it does help me avoid fatty foods for the most part, but still I'd like a bit of steak once in a while without discomfort, or sauteed veggies without having pain. I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this, and if so, do you know if it's gallbladder-dysfunction related? OR is it just the stomach's regular response to fatty foods and since my stomach is so teeny I can feel it much more and it causes discomfort because the bubbles get so trapped?

I'm wondering whether having my gallbladder removed will make this problem go away, make it worse, or make no difference.

Many thanks for your thoughts!!

I was having those same symptoms and then it got so bad that I couldn't eat anything with fat in it. I had my GB out and have had no issues since.

I only have trouble with eggs and Tomato sauce. I can't keep either one down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
