Disappointed with weight loss progress

Recommended Posts

@@kimmeesue - That is the beauty of NSV (Non Scale Victories) . It allows you to be happy with things other than the numbers on the scale. Taking measurements and watching them change. Taking pictures along the way to have a visual of your progression. Noticing that you can walk easier. If you were on meds, the fact that you no longer need them or now use less. The thrill of buying clothes in a size you never imagined seeing again. NSV's are even more important than the scale.

The beauty of NSV. Love that. At 4 mo. and stuck at 47 pounds lost. My husband keeps telling me legs are really slimming down. Will have to get the measuring tape out and count that loss until the scale starts moving again. Thanks. ????

Had a NSV moment with this past weekend's snowstorm. Put on my snow pants that I couldn't even snap up last year and they were too big. Yeah!????

When I began this journey I was over 300#, had a history of being even heavier and have been morbidly obese, obese or overweight MOST of my life (pre sleeve maybe had spent total of 2 years not overweight or obese) in my whole life.

You can imagine how much I wanted to grab onto data that predicted how much i would lose, how fast I would lose, sort of like the infomercials "lose 30 pounds of ugly fat in 30 days". I wanted to know how I was gonna lose 150 pounds of ugly fat in how many days?!?!?!?

I was blessed to work with a NUT and a surgical practice who just didn't play that game. They refused to set a "surgeon's goal" because their point was... "lets say you lose 100# are healthy, your life is so much better but it is short of the goal we set... so you feel like a failure, you don't honor your success and you regain".

Instead, i was guided to focus alot on the process... the WAY of getting healthy less than the measuring sticks (the scale, clothing sizes etc)

Don't get me wrong, I weighed myself during the losing phase and celebrated every new clothing size (getting into single digits was like nirvana... a place i never dreamed I would be). However, the larger point really stuck.

If you follow the methods, you will get slimmer, you will get healthier. Our bodies are all so different, I don't know why Joe lost 150 in 8 months, I lost 150 in 14 months and someone else never gets to their goal. I don't know - but here is what I do know:

1. focusing on the "how" - lets call it following the rules best you can will get you best results you can

2. focusing on the "why" - to regain health, to regain a normal feeling and looking body, to regain mobility, to improve appearance, to be able to MOVE and fully enjoy life. Those things keep you motivated to maintain.

3. less focus on the "what" which is exactly how many pounds and how fast you lose them. I don't mean to say to ignore it, but i guarantee you that over the long haul MAINTAINING can be a real challenge and keeping your methods and motiviation in place are key. Getting down to some arbitrary number you cannot maintain in an acceptable lifestyle and then regaining it is discouraging...

So, don't give up. Just "working the sleeve", maximize the tool best you can and to some extent try to accept and be grateful for your results. If they aren't what you want, there are things you can do to kick em up (already mentioned in this thread) but i think most important is a bit of inner peace on the topic.

okay, climbing down from soapbox. I geniunely wish all the very best success happiness and great health.

I ❤️❤️❤️your post. Always compassionate, filled with great juicy recommendations.

I'm 57 and have lost only 22 lb since June 11 sleeve. I lost most of that in first two weeks. I am on program. Exercising at least 4 days a week. I have faith but it is slow.

22lb in a little over a month. You're still healing and exercising 4 day a week. You are doing fabulous! Be kind to yourself. You will lose. Congrats and keep up the good work. ????

I also was only around the 20lb mark at one month, not much further out either but it seems to be happening a little better this last couple weeks! Plus 22lbs is amazing in a month

Update. Thanks all for encouraging words. I'm six weeks out and down 29 lb since surgery. Losing about 2 or 3 lbs per week now working very hard. That is fine and my expectations are adjusted.

Let me fill you in on more important stuff. I was a 13 year type 2 diabetic. I am now non-diabetic (A-1C is 5.6 with no meds.)!!! Total cholesterol is 95! Blood pressure is 100/60. Every doctor I see gives me a "high five" and cuts my meds in half every time I walk in. I actually jogged on the treadmill yesterday. I walked five rounds of golf after work last week, lifted at gym, worked in heat all weekend, and may no longer have sleep apnea. My biggest downer is that I have to throw away all my clothes. Life is good.

Months out. I am not exercising like I should either. With the small amount of calories intake I thought my weight loss would be more rapidly. :( just looking at the big picture now. I do worry about the honeymoon phase passing and I haven't lost the weight. Needed to lose 100 lbs.

Are you getting in your Protein and Water every day? What does your NUT and surgeon say? Without any details it's hard for us to help you figure out why you.may not be seeing the progress you would like.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
