My esophagus hates me

Recommended Posts

I have been having post OP issues since day after surgery. Can't drink enough, then severe gerd complete with waking up choking on yuck. I was sleeved August 28 and have been re admitted to hospital twice since for dehydration. Three barium swallows later and it has been confirmed my esophagus doesn't like to let anything through it. So the pain in my chest and the feeling of things sitting there has not been my imagination its real. My surgeon says he does not know if this was a problem prior to surgery and i just didn't know it or if this is new. He has put me on reglan and admitted that i could be on it for life he doesn't know yet. So that's all i have for today. Just praying the meds work

Did you have an egd(upper endoscopy) before your surgery? Have they offered any other treatment?

No tests before surgery and had offered nothing but the reglan at the moment

Go see a gastroenterologist...He may consider a EGD w/ dilation balloon and that should open your esophagus up some. That may lessen your chances of having to be on meds for ever... Also did your MD do esophageal manometry pre op?

Please look up the side effects for long term use of reglan

Chunky, thank you for your concern. I have a followup with surgeon tomorrow and will discuss those findings with him and see if there is anything else he can do

Yes, look into reglan. There are some disturbing possible long term issues.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
