Aftercare, labwork, etc

Recommended Posts

I asked the surgeon who I've scheduled with how soon I should see my doctor in town after I return from getting my sleeve. I am going to have surgery in Tijuana. I am communicating mainly through the coordinator. She passed on that I won't really need much, and no labwork until 6 months after the surgery. Does this sound right? I have read others getting labs followed far more frequently.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing but my surgeon followed up with me a week later, then I have another appointment a month later, and then in 6 months... haven't heard talks of lab work yet but I'm assuming it would probably be around the 6month mark...

I had visits with my surgeon & staff at 2 weeks, 1 month & 3 months and I have another scheduled for 6 months out. Had labs drawn at the 1 and 3 month appointments. The only issue that came up was being Vitamin D deficient at the 3 month appointment, which was an ongoing thing for me prior to surgery as well. I think if you are hitting your Protein goals and taking your vitamin/mineral supplements that waiting for 6 months would be fine for the vast majority of people. But you may want to ask your PCP what he/she thinks to be sure.

I had labs at about 3 months, 6 months, and will again at 12 months. Some of my stuff was off on the early ones, so I also had a couple of repeats in there at some point.

Have you talked to your local doc about their schedule? I'm coordinating with my local doc as I will be her patient for aftercare. The lines get a little blurred when you're going elsewhere for the surgery.

My local doctor wants to see me at 2 weeks, 1 month, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, then yearly. I think in the early visits it will be more nutritional and I think she said at the 3 month mark they are doing labs.

Best of luck.

I'm 5 months out, and had my first labs drawn today. I had to reschedule my 4 month followup due to my recovering from shoulder surgery, and not being able to drive myself to the appt. They gave me the lab orders at my 1 month appt, and told me to have them drawn at least a week before my next appt. I was told by the lab that my results will be at the office in about 5 days. So when I see him at the end of the month, I will have all my lab results, and the doc will get the chance to see that I'm almost at goal. :)

I will be telling her shortly, hoping she will be supportive but in any case letting her know is the only responsible thing. I'm going out of pocket / Medical Tourism and I'll be surprised if she reacts positively.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
