My post-op diet moves kind of fast...

Recommended Posts

On post-op day 3 I could start eating foods like refried Beans, cottage cheese, eggs, Soups, mashed potatoes, etc. I'm only on post op day 4 and I ate about 320 calories today between Protein Drink, Vitamin chews, and all of the food I ate. I know this would sound stupid to a normal person but is this too many calories following the surgery? I don't want to eat too much!!! I guess I'm just scared of doing anything that would sabotage this. Everything I've eaten I've logged and it's all been healthy, and it's been a sugar free fat free diet... But... Calories? Help! Thanks!

I haven't had mine yet, and obviously your Dr does things differently - but I was told that you can't start eating soft foods that soon. Like you should still be on liquids only diet until week 3 at least.

What did your Dr say about Calorie intake and range?

He never said anything about calories... Just to limit carbs, fats, and sugars.

I consumed 600 calories when I was on Protein shakes!

So how many calories do sleeved people consume in the maintenance stage?

They had my eating purée foods in the hospital the morning after surgery. I started soft foods at 2 weeks out, and regular food at 4 weeks. I'm 3.5 months out and 70lbs down. Each surgeon is different and just follow your surgeons guidelines. Listen to your body, if it seems painful or isn't sitting right, wait a week and try again :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
