After VSG do you have pregnancy cravings & gain weight like a normal pregnant woman?

Recommended Posts

This question is for those who have had babies after having the VSG procedure, even better yet those who have had a baby before and a baby after the VSG procedure.

*What are the major differences in pregnancy before and after the VSG procedure?

*Did you have weird cravings? It seems like you would not because the Ghrelin is gone.

*Did you gain a lot of weight? Was it a struggle to gain the weight?

*Were you nauseous? more than normal.

*Were there any concerns about taking in enough food for the baby?

*Anything else noteworthy?

It is strange but I can't seem to fine a lot of information on this topic. I just want to make sure I am prepared...

Thanks!!! :tongue2:

This is just from my experience. I had my son 3 months ago and was sleeved 12/14/2010.

*What are the major differences in pregnancy before and after the VSG procedure?

Fuller faster....

*Did you have weird cravings? It seems like you would not because the Ghrelin is gone.

Not weird but you did have cravings.

*Did you gain a lot of weight? Was it a struggle to gain the weight?

I gained about 45 lbs and no it was not a struggle to gain the weight. I was monitored a lot more closely and the weight crept on at the end. Some of it was Fluid.

*Were you nauseous? more than normal.

Nope.

*Were there any concerns about taking in enough food for the baby?

No, they will monitor you

*Anything else noteworthy?

I had a healthy happy pregnancy. I find that it is a little harder to lose the weight now but it is coming off. I am just going to be patient and I know that it will come off again, after all I did just have a baby.

This question is for those who have had babies after having the VSG procedure' date=' even better yet those who have had a baby before and a baby after the VSG procedure.

*What are the major differences in pregnancy before and after the VSG procedure?

I seem to be more tired than the last two pre sleeved, the nausea was painful, Constipation, I'm nesting very early.

*Did you have weird cravings? It seems like you would not because the Ghrelin is gone.

I have cravings but I never know what it is that I'm craving.

*Did you gain a lot of weight? Was it a struggle to gain the weight?

I'm currently 20 weeks and about 10lbs gained.

*Were you nauseous? more than normal.

Very nauseated. And it was painful. I didn't gain any weight until about 10-14 weeks.

*Were there any concerns about taking in enough food for the baby?

Not really, your restriction seems to give some. But if I eat more than I drink I do suffer dehydration so or is a delicate balance.

*Anything else noteworthy?

Don't worry about the weight gain. My nausea experience seems to be rare. And just make sure you've got a great doctor. I am experiencing hypoglycemia so I end up having to eat until 11 at night, its crazy I had it drop to 48 one night. But with the other two I had gestational diabetes. Just due diligence and awareness of your body :) Good luck!

It is strange but I can't seem to fine a lot of information on this topic. I just want to make sure I am prepared...

Thanks!!! :tongue2:[/quote']

I could easily satisfy cravings last time... this time also I am super sick and keeping food on the tummy at all times is a full time job

*Did you have weird cravings? It seems like you would not because the Ghrelin is gone.

I get HUNGRY because the baby needs something... I am craving milk and garlic... together

*Did you gain a lot of weight? Was it a struggle to gain the weight?

I have been losing weight... I am 9weeks and only 12weeks post op (this is an oopsababy)

*Were you nauseous? more than normal.

For me it is WAY more than my other two pregnancies combined

*Were there any concerns about taking in enough food for the baby?

Yes my OB has labeled me high risk and is concerned about the babies growth so we are doing extra ultrasounds. It is very common for post WLS babies yo have low birth weight

*Anything else noteworthy?

I had a hard time finding an OB that would take me on... most of them dont know a whole lot about WLS and pregnancy and I live in a big city.. I am crazy tired all the time and of course the nausea is hard but its all worth it in the end

It is strange but I can't seem to fine a lot of information on this topic. I just want to make sure I am prepared...

I'll answer the same way kgremmy did.

*What are the major differences in pregnancy before and after the VSG procedure?

None at all. ( I was sleeved in November 2011)

*Did you have weird cravings? It seems like you would not because the Ghrelin is gone.

Nope. Never had craving with my first pregnancy (before VSG) and neither had cravings with my second pregnancy (after VSG). I just wanted to eat all the time. Probably because can't eat much in one sitting.

*Did you gain a lot of weight? Was it a struggle to gain the weight?

Gained a ton of weight! 55lbs. Wayy wayy wayyyyyyyy too much. I voiced my concerns to my doctors, but they said it was ok and didn't seemed concern about it :(

*Were you nauseous? more than normal.

Not at all

*Were there any concerns about taking in enough food for the baby?

Never, I was constantly hungry and believe that's the reason why I gained so much weight.

*Anything else noteworthy?

Yes, eventhough I had no weird cravings I did want to eat the "comfort food" You should just snack as much as you want, but stick to veggies and fruits and nuts.

*It is strange but I can't seem to fine a lot of information on this topic. I just want to make sure I am prepared...*

I know, I fell the same way. I had my baby 3 months ago. Healthy little boy. I lost 30lbs within the first couple of weeks. I still have to loose other 25lbs to be on my pre-pregnancy weight. It is not coming off, but to be honest I have not gone back to eat the weight I was eating before and I have not resume my excesice routine. I'm exhausted! (due to my fibromyalgia and also have 4 yr old and work full time).

I just took my first step into going back to my routine and started to log everything that goes into my mouth. It is a big help.

good luck!

Maria.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
