Problems With Fluid Intake

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 days post op and I'm having problems getting in a lot of fluids. I'm thirsty and want to guzzle down my crystal light but I know I can't and I've been trying to take small sips every 10 minutes, this has become a chore and makes me feel bloated....especially the Protein shakes!

How much Fluid can you handle at once? What should I do?

Thanks everyone!

The best way to know if you're hydrated enough is to look at the color of your urine. If it's dark, you're dehydrated. It should be a pale amber color. As the swelling subsides, you'll find it easier to get fluids down. Don't attempt to guzzle anything at this point post-op. Keep fluids with you at all times and sip, sip, sip.

What will also help is getting up and walking around. Splint your stomach with a pillow and try bending a little (not too low). Give it another few days and you'll feel A LOT better.

64 ounces/day is a goal....not a reality for a recent post-op. Just do the best you can. And remember that Protein Drinks do count as part of your liquid intake. Take small sips....and try to take one every chance you get....when you brush your teeth, when you take a pill (crushed, of course!), when you are sitting on the potty even in the middle of the night (I kept a bottle by my potty for weeks), carry a bottle in the car. Just try to add a little more liquid each day....it gets easier, I promise!! You can do it before long!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
