Which Pre-Op appointments did your spouse/significant other attend?

Recommended Posts

My DH is completely supportive of my WLS, and we have been discussing which appointments he should come to. He did not attend the seminar with me, because he was home with our kids. I have my initial consultation coming up in a couple of weeks and I don't think he will come with me to that either, because he wants to save his time off to take care of me post surgery.

So which ones should he come to? I think he will be coming to the NUT visits with me because we share the shopping and cooking duties. What else? I have to attend a support group both before and after surgery. It might be nice for him to come then, but again he will be home with the kids. We could probably get a sitter if it is worth it though. Obviously he won't be coming to the psych consult or the other basic pre-op tests, etc.

So what is your experience with a spouse/significant other?

My hubby came with me to my appointment when I met with the surgeon before I had my surgery, and was there on surgery day. All the other pre-op appointments I did on my own.

My husband only came with me on surgery day. He was very supportive but I filled him in on details so he didn't need to attend other apps. My mom was apprehensive about the surgery, so I took her to a pre op appt so she could meet my surgeon and ask questions.

This makes me feel better! I was worried that he might miss something but it sounds like we're on the right track.

My hubby will only be coming day of surgery.

He did attend the mandatory support group with me because it was on a Saturday and he actually enjoyed it. He asked if I needed to go to more because he wanted to come, but I only needed to go to one and I'm not a big in-person support group kind of girl (I like this one just fine!)

My mom came to my NUT appointment just because I thought she might like to be involved in some way but not because I needed her to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
