How Long til Hunger Nerve comes back?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 months post op and do not have hunger pains as of yet. If I do not eat for a long period of time then my stomach will feel hollow (best way I can describe it) and obviously it is. However I do not have hunger pains.

Really? Did your surgeon tell you he did this?

The vagus nerve is usually left fully intact with VSG surgery.

Yep, he told me he was cutting the nerve but that it would grow back/regenerate within a few months and that is typically when my hunger pangs would start to return

I find this interesting.., like I said typically the nerve is left intact. But with VSG the fundus is taken out which is the main producer of ghrelin

(Hunger hormone) Though the fundus is the main producer of this hormone other parts of the body produce it too and it will even out (become greater) after time because the other producers of it will kick up production....

All in about the same time (months to a year)

I did read some experimental stuff about the vagus nerve but... I've not heard of a doctor doing the procedure on a sleeve patient.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
