Surgery scheduled for March 28

Recommended Posts

I am very excited about my upcoming surgery. My doctor has his patients begin Protein Shakes 4 weeks out. For 2 weeks I am allowed only 1 meal a day and 2 Protein shakes. Then at 2 weeks prior to the date, the all liquid diet begins. I am really hungry, but the excitement outweighs (no pun intended!) the hunger pains. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Well I am not known for my wisdom---but the best thing I can tell you is---this time will pass, and when you get through the surgery, and the post op diet, and you have lost considerable weight by following the plan. Then you get back to living, and eating normally, just in lesser amounts. You will look back and it all will be so worth it!

It is very trying to follow the diets they give. Especially when you read, that some Dr.'s don't give their patients any kind of pre-op diet. But it will prepare you for the liquids following surgery, and it will help with the carb cravings---because you are eliminating them now. You won't have to deal with the last supper syndrome. Which is silly---once you heal you can have any of it again---just less of it will satisfy you!!!

I love my band!!! I cannot say enough good things about it! You have made an excellent decision. I know the nerves will kick in, and the hunger is not fun, but it is just a few weeks of "dieting" again, and you can move on. If I can survive it anyone can!!!!

Welcome to LBT, if you have any questions, ask away! If you just need to talk to calm your nerves, log on, and keep us company!! We are glad you are here, and hope your surgery and recovery are smooth as can be. Mine was simple, uncomfortable as opposed to painful following the actual surgery. I was up and around the 3rd day without issue! You will be fine!!!

Thanks, Kat. Your comments were so uplifting and positive. I am really looking forward to the procedure. I don't even mind the hunger so much. I am sure I am losing more weight now then I will after the procedure!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
