Do I really have to give up Diet Coke

Recommended Posts

Carbonated drinks are a HUGE problem for me. Even a sip and I throw up. I used to be a diet coke addict as well. Trust me, one drink and you'll break your addiction. It seems terrible now, I know. I am a recent bander (11/14/06). Water and tea is it for me! And really, I don't miss it anymore. bread was another addiction of mine. I could have survived solely on bread and diet Coke. They are both problems for me and I have no desire for either now. Throwing up with the band is a lot like shock therapy....(Can I get a witness?). The things you enjoy now seem like a lot to give up but when you see the scale moving in the right direction, you'll gladly say goodbye. God Bless!

I used to be a major diet coke addict as well and thought I would never survive without it. However, my surgeon said it was a no-no, and I wanted this band more than anything, so I stopped cold turkey. The funny thing is, I have craved it on several occassions. Then, the other week my husband and I were travelling down 95 and were both dieing of thirst. We stopped at a rest area and all they had were sodas. So, my hubby got a diet coke and I said I could wait until the next exit. I had a drink of his, figuring a small drink wouldn't hurt and it would satisfy me until I got some Water. Well, I took that one drink and spit it out. It tasted absolutely nasty to me!

I have not tried any carbonated drinks or my favorite; Diet Coke since the surgery. So, not sure how it would go down. Think I will wait on finding out!

I have vomited three times, now. And it is always from taking too big a bite of something, then immediately realizing it, but then it is too late.

You all are right.....lots of slime! Wasn't sure what slime meant prior to that.

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

I am very addicted to Diet Coke but it is just one more thing that I need to curb. Actually my husband is liking the idea of the surgery more now that he knows I won't be able to drink it. Besides the cost of buying it, I think he is sick of all the recycling that my Diet Coke habit causes (since he takes it out every week). :)

Heck I will just have to start drinking coffee like everyone else in the Seattle area.

Now what is this about giving up bread? ????

Does that mean no sandwiches and no hamburgers? Or just no bread that they serve you before a meal at some restaurants?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
