Weight Gain after 4 years out from surgery

Recommended Posts

I am desperate so here it goes........I am approx 4 years out from my sleeve surgery. I thought I was doing good and my biggest issues was how to gain weight. My original weight PreOp was 240 lbs - 4 months ago I had maintained 135 to 145 lbs for 3 1/2 years. Friday i will be 44 years old. Although I thought I was dealing with anxiety for all of 2012 this year I was finally diagnosed with an over active thyroid. In 4 months I have gained 50lbs and now weigh 191 as of doctors visit yesterday. I am devastated am desperate to get the weight off but I have no idea what to do. I was wearing a size 2-4 and now I need all new clothes including my undies.......I am embarrassed and have been spending a large amount of time inside. Everyone keeps saying the extra weight looks good but I know better. My health is at risk and I feel like I have somehow failed. Anybody have a similar experience or care to provide some advice?

QueenBee-

Have you seen an Endocrinologist? Something is going on there. Could be hormones, as well. Find a doctor who will listen to you.

Good luck!

Definitely see endocrinologist or ask your PvP to run a complete thyroid blood test. I have thyroiditis and it will give the appearance of overactive when it is actually very inactive.

Yes - they are the ones that gave me the medicine that I think made me gain the weight. I stopped taking it after I gained 30lbs. I guess it was too late because the weight gain continued. I tried to lower my calories as I use to - 700 calories for me in a day use to be no problem but after that medication I now seem to be hungry all the time. While I still it small quantities and small amounts with each setting, I eat more now that I use to and my pouch - most times has no issue.

I eat about 6/8 ounces maybe depending on what it is - however the body craves items that are easily liquified and I am conscientious of that aspect.

Have you tried little miss divas boot camp? It has worked to get many back on track. Also, what did you dr. say about the rapid gain? Maybe there is an adjustment needed instead of just not taking the meds.

For me, I try to clear the house of foods that tempt me, stock up on filling foods, track my food and weigh each morning. Perhaps one of the weight loss challenges here would help? I used them in the losing phase to hold myself accountable.

We are all rooting for you.

Also hang out I the vets forum here. There are many long term sleevers there who can offer advice and support.

That sounds like it's ALL about the hormones and thyroxine levels... As the learned ones above have stated - try and get a referral to an Endo. I feel for you. x

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
