what exactly is a fill?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am still researching this LapBand stuff. My consult is 3/13. I hear many of you talk about fills-what are they? Do they make you less hungry?

And as for the scarring, does that ever go away? Or just fades?

Thanks!

Hi Quadmom---I have to say you must be one busy lady!!! This band and weight loss would benefit you with increased energy---I can attest to that, and I have lots of years on you!!!

Ok, a fill, also called an adjustment---is when they inject saline solution into your port, which is stitched into a muscle wall. They access it with a needle, poked through your skin, into the port. Not much worse than a shot or blood draw. The saline then flows through tubing to the actual band itself, which is a ring with a silicone balloon type thing in the middle which inflates with the saline, thereby allowing food to sit in the small part of your stomach and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. When you are full you don't eat---which is the best way this helps you lose weight.

I have 1 scar just left of center, about 6-7 inches below my breasts, which is my port scar. It is about 1 1/2 inches across. Another scar about 3/4 of an inch up a bit higher, still on my left side, which is where the band was inserted. And I have 3 small almost puncture size scars, 1 above (almost between my breasts), and 2 below 1 on one side 1 on the other. Now I also ended up with 2 extra scars where my Dr. removed 2 larger skin tags for me---but they are all fading, the port scar is the only one you can actually see without having them pointed out. I hope to have a Tummy Tuck when this is all done, as I carry 90% of my extra weight in my stomach, and it is going to be tons of excess skin----but even then I will never wear belly baring clothes---I am 46 for heavens sake---so the scars are so minor, they don't bother me a bit.

Good Luck in your research, ask any questions you may have!!

Kat

The scars fade dramatically! I can barely see mine, and I will take them any day over the fat squishy belly I used to have. Stick around this forum and you will learn tons! There is even a thread that shows pics of lapband surgery scars. They dont look any worse than any other laproscopic surgery scars.....like gallbladder for example.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
